More than 4400 Olympia voters have signed the Capitol Park Foundation Initiative, well over the required number. Friends of the Waterfront and others will continue to gather signatures until Thursday, when the signatures will be submitted to the city. The last time a successful initiative petition drive happened in Olympia was over a half a century ago in 1955, when citizens rose up to block the logging off of the Olympia Watershed and to create, instead, Watershed Park.

Given how rare an occurrence a successful initiative is in the City of Olympia, I'm surprised the Olympian hasn't reported on this.  4400 is a lot of naysayers!

This is GREAT!

Thanks for the report, jlw.

This is so inspiring. I love Watershed Park! Just think: we can have another similarly awesome place, right in the heart of the city.

I haven't signed yet...

...where do I do dat?

How to sign

The best thing would be to come to the hearing tonight -- there will be copies available for signing in the lobby of the Washington Center from the time the doors open at 5:00 until at least the time testimony gets underway at 6:30 p.m. Or, you can drop into Anne Buck's spice shop, next door to Darby's on 5th Avenue, right across from the Capital Theater. Or you can go to this website and download your very own personal copy, sign it, maybe get a few friends, spouses, and neighbors to sign, or just sign it singly, and mail it in. Thanks!

Great News!

Petitions always have their share of invalid signatures. Any sense about this one? The extra 400 sounds like a good buffer though. Congratulations to the folks who pulled this togehter in such a short time. Wonderful work.

Yes to the buffer

This initiative is a bit tricky because signers have to be registered voters in the City of Olympia in order for their signatures to be valid. A lot of people who seem to live in Olympia actually live in the unincorporated county. Oddly, people whom I always assumed lived in Olympia, who live closer to downtown than I do, are actually not within the city limits. So, the Friends of the Waterfront and others involved in gathering signatures are very carefully getting extra signatures, realizing that in the validation process, some of them will be discarded. The actual number of valid signatures needed, which is 15% of the registered voters at the time of the last mayoral election, is slightly under 4000, so there's already a good buffer of more than 10%. The expectation is that there will be more than 5000 signatures on Thursday when this is delivered to the city clerk's office for validation.

Olympia v "Olympia"

This is true. There are many people who assume that they live in Olympia, because it's on the address on their mail. If this petition seeks to get on the ballot, it can only count those in the city limits. I know canvassers have been targeting areas within the city limits. But tabling at events like the Farmers Market will draw names from a VERY wide geography. So, who has to pay to go through and check all the names?
»

County Auditor

The County Auditor's office will validate the signatures. I can't really gauge the tone of your question -- do you have a problem with the initiative process because there is a cost associated with validating signatures?
»

Not sure how they conduct the validation process in Olympia

But it would save a lot of time if they simply took a large enough random sample to ensure 99-percent confidence that the sample mean reflexts reality. They don't need to validate every signature. I believe that's how the state does it. If it looks too close to call, then they check everyone.

deadline

Also, I hear that the deadline is later in October, so that if there aren't enough, there should be time to make up the difference...

Rule of Thumb

Get 1,000 more than you need because a lot will be thrown out for a variety of reasons, such as signatures not matching, not being registered in the city, etc.

Signature Update 4786

I heard that 300 more signed the petition at the Tuesday Meeting. Running count is up to 4786.
