While looking through various local community resources online I came across this from SafePlace and I want to pass it on:
5 things to say to a survivor of intimate violence
1) I’m afraid for your safety
2) I’m afraid for the safety of your children/family
3) You don’t deserve to be controlled or abused
4) This is not your fault
5) There are places to call for help

If you need more information about intimate violence, or what to say to someone in this situation, SafePlace is available 24-hours a day. Call us at 360-754-6300 (voice), 360-943-6703 (TTY) or email: help@safeplaceolympia.org.

Sometimes words aren't enough...

If in a position to do so, how about "how can I help?"

Also, it helps when people are willing to become educated in regards to the roots of intimate violence and the unconscious (or conscious) cultural habits that normalize it.

I have done the

"How can I help" bit a couple of times...  it is not a fun thing at all.  Funny when my offer is accepted it generally revolves around the fact I am a big tall guy willing to offer a helping hand, and I wind up standing some sort of watch or another for a few days.  Not fun at all.

Impact of Violence on Men

I know that there are services for women who are victims of domestic violence.

I wish there was more focus paid to general violence in society, for example: aggressive drivers, racism and other acts of prejudice or discrimination, the effects of the "entertainment" industry, war, extinction, ecological and other environmental degradation...

Also, I am interested in how society treats men surrounding the issue of violence. In some circles, men are expected to be tough and even enjoy violence. What effect does that have on individuals and on society?

Personally

I do not feel men should be "tough" or "enjoy violence"  I do believe men are more genetically predisposed to engage in offensive violence the "agressor of the species" if you will.  I have found women tend to engage in defensive violence "the protector of the species" if you will, for instance defending her children.

That said, I believe that there are two types of violence.  Unjust violence, which is destructive and serves no purpose except to destroy for the sake of destroying, and just violence, which is violence used to protect and ensure survival.

I am nonviolent myself, perhaps a mindset born of a less than ideal childhood.  I will do everything I can to avoid a violent personal encounter, but if given no choice I will use every appropriate level of force to ensure my own wellbeing or that of another.

Sound weird?  Some say so.

I believe that that society needs to place more emphasis on unjust violence, which in turn will cut down on the need for righteous violence.  However while trying to tame unjust violence, I do not believe that the capability for just violence should be removed from society.  I do not believe unjust violence will ever be removed from society as a whole, and that we must stand ever vigilant against it, through prevention means, and through protective means.

I agree

and I would include violence against animals and the way that all of these types of violence are normalized to one extent or another.
