I've noticed the Oly air lately has a stagnant feel and smell to it, also that my lungs have been reacting, so I did some quick research and found some answers. I'll paste info (current today 1/24) from the good folks at the Olympic Region Clean Air Agency, follow link for the specifics on how to help us all breath better. Because of concerns over degrading air quality, the Olympic Region Clean Air Agency has called a Stage 1 Burn Ban in Thurston Country, effective immediately. Under a Stage 1 Ban, residents are not allowed to use fireplaces or uncertified woodstoves, and all outdoor burning and land clearing burning is prohibited. Additionally, residents with certified woodstoves are asked to voluntarily refrain from using those devices until air quality improves – forecasts suggest that will occur over the weekend. A system of stable, high pressure over Western Washington, coupled with overnight temperatures well below freezing, caused air pollution levels to climb. A change in weather will be needed to restore cleaner air quality, but the current weather pattern is expected to remain unchanged until Saturday at the earliest.

tonight's realization
Submitted by enpen on Thu, 01/24/2008 - 9:31pm.As I was huffing back from my picture walk into downtown tonight (huffing being abnormal) and saw somebody run out of his house and into his car, it hit me: air quality isn't immediately apparent when you transport yourself in a metal and glass bubble of air from one bubble of air (a climate controlled building) to another, thus a concern about it is less likely to be present.
I wonder what percentage of the people unconcerned about our current levels of pollution currently spend time every day (or nearly every day) walking more than a mile in an urban center?
I do
Submitted by security_six on Fri, 01/25/2008 - 8:54am.I usually walk a mile or more every day. Today I left the dinghy at home and walked the distance from West Bay Marina to downtown. Good walk despite the chill.

Submitted by OperaGirl on Fri, 01/25/2008 - 1:24pm.I am head over heels in love with my woodstove. I love watching the chimney as only the slightest puff of smoke comes out every few seconds. I look down my nose at the people across the street whose chimney billows out a huge stream of smoke non stop. I am a total woodstove snob now! I don't have a fire going today and so it's freezing in here. =( I'm not comfortable until it's at least 75 degrees in the house. Yes, I am a complete wimp.
