The family is now Olympian.  We today began our internet service, so we're officially OlyBloggers now.  We dig it already.  Our daughter loved the Farmer's Market this weekend past, people slow and stop to let others cross the street, the arts community feels down and Hera and Alpheus are probably down at the Spar.  We're happy here'n stuff.

As new residents looking to make roots and be community we have a couple questions (we appreciate answers purely dialectic,  subjective  and  anywhere  in between):

Does anyone know about the community activity level of the local banks?  We'd like to bank with a company who gives back to the Oly.

Does anyone have any recommendations for Pediatricians?

Thanks again for the Tuesday invitation, Rob.  We're working toward being able to join your group next week.

We're likin' the Arghyeematey Radio Stations, the Cafe rich downtown and the Olymosphere.  Oly kicks ass.

TULIP for all your banking needs.

TULIP in the Eastside Coop does it all. They are a local credit union that's designed to help low income members of Olympia. They also serve members of the coop. Now you have a reason to join the coop! Handy, huh? I've recently moved all my banking there from a large corporate bank.

That's my 2¢ on that topic...

Tulip

I was with Twin County - now Twinstar.  The were friendly, but stodgy.  I switched to Tulip.  They are no frills, coop-affiliated.  No problems to date, plus it's on my normal stops around town since it's at the eastside coop.

Plus...

...you can use any WSECU ATMs for free, including for making deposits, and their online banking is now functional.

I have no idea about local

I have no idea about local banks to be honest. I like Washington mutual, the staff are always friendly, so I've found no reason to change. Dr. Degive is awesome, he is on the NE side of town near St. Peters hospital.

Having grown up going to Dr.

Having grown up going to Dr. Degive, I can definitely agree with that!

I haven't had a problem with

I haven't had a problem with Twin County (or whatever it's called now).

If you or your main squeeze...

...or any one else in your family work in any level of gov't, you can sign up with the Washington State Employee's Credit Union, which is a very good bank.

any credit union for that matter

CUs in Wasington are at least in theory community based, they.re going to give you the most bang for your community buck. Other good "local" banks include Heritage, Venture, South Sound Bank, Anchor Bank, Oly Fed, and Bank of the Pacific (though I'm not sure they have a branch up here).

To avoid: Bank of America and US Bank.

I agree with Rick

WSECU is an awesome place, and very state of the art, web site is user friendly, and the people are very nice and competent.

And welcome to Oly

Free Radio Olympia

98.5, if you haven't found it yet, is usually commercial free bliss. Can't wait to see you at Bigelow!

Yes indeed!  They've managed to pull the patch over our collective eye.

If you get a chance, visit

If you get a chance, visit the Spar now, before it is transformed by the new owners. I'm sure the new Spar will also be just fine, but the current version is a last-chance glimpse at the old pre-college town Oly. Glad you arrived safe and intact.

pre-college town Oly?

What about the Rib-eye?

You're also welcome to join

You're also welcome to join my household for Friday night community dinners. This Friday, we're having lasagna and garlic bread (made by a local garlic fanatic). These dinners are open to the whole community, and we often have a dozen or more folks there (including myself, my husband Phil and our housemates Selena and James, as well as several women from the Guesthouse). The food is always yummy and (nevermind one nasty rumor) never from a can! If you're interested, we're at 1320 8th Ave SE (between Boundary and Central, just east of downtown) and dinner starts at 6 or 7.
