an independent account of the Roving Street Party and Rally for Civil Liberties...

About forty Olympia residents took to the streets June 9, 2006 to kick off the Weekend of Resistance Against the "Green Scare" with a street party and rally for civil liberties. After a rousing public address by Kassey Shoemaker of Olympia Civil Liberties Resource, we made our way into the streets accompanied by a mobile sound system on a bike cart and live deejays keeping the party jams fresh. At the front of our column of revelry, two demonstrators carried a banner that read "Reclaim Our Rights! Stop the Green Scare!". Another marcher carried a sign that read "We will not be silenced by fear!" and "Free Nathan and Joyanna! Free Jeff Luers!".

I did something this week for which I become deeply angry when others do the same. I cleared the brush in my back yard to prevent homeless people from camping there.

My wife and I live in the new Bread & Roses house on 4th Ave. This house is open to the street community about 45 hours per week. Volunteer advocates gather at our home to help homeless individuals to gain access to services such as drug treatment, disability benefits, and housing. We offer a beautiful, home-centered atmosphere in which this work can take place. But unfortunately we are renters.

When we first moved in, our landlord was excited to be able to support Bread & Roses, but nervous about how we would work out as renters. Our neighbors, who rent from the same landlord as us, were very nervous about our presence. Neither the landlord nor the neighbors are bad people. In fact, the landlord recently sat for lunch with me and a good friend of mine who lives with serious schizophrenia. The two of them got along fabulously. If this friend of mine were to camp in my back yard, though, it would cause a problem. It could scare off the neighbor’s customers.

And there has been a problem. There have been at least one or two people camping in the back yard each night for the last couple of weeks. The neighbors have commented to us on the situation a few times now. I have gone out each night at odd hours to, in the kindest fashion I could muster, ask them to leave. And finally a few days ago I cleared out the brush to eliminate discreet places for people to sleep.

As I cleared brush, I meditated on how screwed up this situation is. Homeless people need to sleep more than other people need to use credit unions. They need to sleep more than other people need to practice yoga, or get haircuts, or buy office supplies. And the truth is that sleeping homeless people do nothing to prevent people from practicing yoga or stopping in at the credit union. It is their own fear of homeless people that stops them.

Even people who call themselves Nazis need love. Before their upcoming performance here in our city, I thought I'd help make everyone feel more at home by providing introductions.

We don't know yet who all will be performing, if we are lucky, SS Mann Mark Martin will be one of the Nazis on stage. (Updated note: Mr. Martin did not make an appearance.) (Edit 10/2008 - dead email address removed) Mr. Martin in reality is based in Ohio, in fantasy in Nazi Germany. He is a tireless worker for the cause. Mr. Martin also uses the nickname "Frank Furter". And he is quoted in a May 2006 Time Magazine article: "How Immigration is Rousing the Zealots".

Mr. Martin is an ex-Marine, a chef, and he also prizes his organic garden. We can adopt him as a penpal and guide him to the understanding that we too in Olympia prize our organic gardens, we love our food, and we really are also truly human, just like him.

Any potential penpals of Mr. Martin need to be aware that he tends to express himself rather boisterously, so caution is advised. (He can get downright rude.) This photo captures him in just such a moment.

all that hate must be fun. i like hate. i hate cops that tell me that i cant skate on the capitol campus. party poopers. i'm not gonna sue. i AM gonna bust sick tricks that the tourists like watching if they get a chance. the troops in those memorials fought for freedom. freedom for me to skate! if kids can throw balls let me skate. i wont grind any ledges to rubble. i'll just bust fat 360 kickflips over the stairs and the rail. i won't run anybody over. i'll just go mock-ten and gap the road. i've given out too many fake names to go back there, so now i'm pissed off that i can't go back. i'm about to stage a protest on the capitol steps, but i am looking for new spots with all the new state buildings instead. anyways, the nazis should look for new spots too. stop preying on Michigan and Washington, the prey aint as weak as you think. all that police protection won't save you at night. watch out for slugs when you're camping, they hate you too. anyways, nazis just want what you and i want: to preserve their precious little race. do that in Germany, the U.S. was founded on inter-racial breeding with pocahontus (sp?, sorry natives, no hate for you, this is your country and the stupid nazis act like its theirs, WTF?). nazis message is phallic and weak. it does not deserve any more attention than I, a republican conservative christian/celtic skateboarder get at Evergreen. if Oly had some balls, we would ignore the nazis. if we give them attention, its because we harbor just as much hate as they do, if we ignore them, we are stronger. Nazis are not a threat because we are on Native Land---not Hitler's Germany. Even in Germany, nazis get no love. My mom is German. Born and raised. She's smart. She says nazis' message is outdated and if failed so we need to try love instead. Nazis are a petty, phallic disgrace who are trying to reignite an old flame because they are victims of their own brains that subconsciensously repeat past traumatic events over and over again until the victim (nazis) die of stress.

Adam Wilson, state government reporter for the Olympian has his blog at State Government Blog.

He has a 6/7/2006 entry "Nazis: Not popular, inconvient for parking":

No surprise, we should think, that the state Human Rights Commission issued a stern condemnation of a Nazi group that has rallied in Olympia this year and plans to do so again on July 3.

The commission’s May 26 resolution states in part, “The Nazi message is a hateful one, against people of color, Jews, gays and lesbians, and people with disabilities. The commissioners and staff of the Washington State Human Rights Commission are deeply troubled to learn of the appearance of Nazis in Washington State. They are a shocking reminder that racism and hate crimes continue to seek a foothold in the Pacific Northwest.

I sent a very polite request to mindfelon@yahoo.com, asking to be added to the traitorous scum list, in solidarity with those already on the list. Here's the response I got.

A right-on-the-mark commentary by Ken Schram of KOMO on Lt. Ehren Watada trying to weasel out of his obligations. Also some good comments on the "peace" groups that are supporting him. I don't agree with all his commentaries but at least he does apply some sanity and common sense when he writes his comments

Here it is!

Something that seems to happen frequently at marches: The march begins, and the loudest men charge quickly to the front of the crowd, shouting chants and raising their fists. I start out in front, trying stay with the marchers, but soon I am hobbling along, baby on hip, diaper bag hanging from my shoulder, and dragging some ridiculously large sign that my daughter insisted on holding only to refuse to carry it anymore. My chant is weaker then the men's up front, who's hands are free, but for a megaphone. I am a bit out of breath. Pretty soon, my kid starts whining about the walk, or begging for juice, or meandering towards traffic, and I am further diverted from the forward momentum of the rally. A lot of reporters want to take my kids' pictures. Everybody asks if its their first protest and I say, "No,"...but I am wishing it was our last.

After a half hour we are inevitably at the very end of the march. The crowd keeps bolting along, but as I look around, I see all the other people with small children are also straggling behind. Also people in wheelchairs. There is a frantic energy in the back. No one is chanting. We gave up on that a long time ago. We are simply rushing to follow the loudest-men-led crowd, which is moving at a pace that seems break-neck to us with our automated chairs, or unwieldy loads, or sobbing toddlers. The police are closer to us in the rear than we are to the rest of the march. We get all of their bored, rolling-eyes stares, and curt little motorcycle siren blips. We can hardly hear the chants anymore.

And I think, isn't this what's wrong with everything in the first place?

Ronald Reagan - divorced the mother of two of his children to marry Nancy Reagan, who bore him a daughter only 7 months after the marriage.

Bob Dole - divorced the mother of his child, who had nursed him through the long recovery from his war wounds.

Newt Gingrich - divorced his wife who was dying of cancer.

Dick Armey - House Majority Leader - divorced

Sen. Phil Gramm of Texas - divorced

Gov. John Engler of Michigan - divorced

Gov. Pete Wilson of California - divorced

George Will - divorced

Sen. Lauch Faircloth - divorced

Rush Limbaugh - Rush and his current wife Marta have six marriages and four divorces between them.

Rep. Bob Barr of Georgia - Barr, not yet 50 years old, has been married three times. Barr had the audacity to author and push the "Defense of Marriage Act." The current joke making the rounds on Capitol Hill is "Bob Barr...WHICH marriage are you defending?!?

Sen. Alfonse D'Amato of New York - divorced

Sen. John Warner of Virginia - divorced (once married to Liz Taylor.)

Gov. George Allen of Virginia - divorced

Henry Kissinger - divorced

Rep. Helen Chenoweth of Idaho - divorced

Sen. John McCain of Arizonia - divorced

Rep. John Kasich of Ohio - divorced

Rep. Susan Molinari of New York - Republican National Convention Keynote Speaker - divorced

So ... homosexuals are going to destroy the institution of marriage? Wait a minute, it seems the Christian Heterosexual Republicans are doing a fine job without anyone's help!
