This was posted under “breaking news” in the Olympian today:

"Handicapped homeless man set on fire in Spokane, seriously burned

SPOKANE (AP) — A homeless, wheelchair-bound man was hospitalized with extensive burns after being set afire in downtown Spokane, police said.

Spokane police spokesman Tom Lee identified the man as 50-year-old Douglas R. Dawson. He was flown to Seattle’s Harborview Medical Center, the region’s trauma and burn center, in critical condition on Friday."

I’m tired of this crap.  Every day I hear stories from street people about being “moved on”, verbally and even physically assaulted by pedestrians and cops, and being degraded by social workers.  I’m tired of it.

Seven years ago the Olympian reported on a homeless man who had been stabbed eight times by a pack of youth.  They didn’t rob him.  I was one of the EMT’s who responded on the call.  I remember, very clearly, the man gurgling through the blood (he had been stabbed in the throat).  He said he didn’t know the kids.  They had no reason to attack him.  There could have been some other reason, but I was left with the impression that it had been a hate crime.

Do you know anybody missing a brown pit bull-type female (correction: male) dog?  He's been wandering around the last couple of days.  Seems really mellow, but may be injured.

(We tried calling Animal Services, but w/out a place to confine him, he just sort of melted away when they showed up.)

This quote is too priceless, I must post it also:
Nutria are known for their dancing abilities and their appreciation of 1930s jazz. They were the constant companions of the pioneering blues masters such as Blind 'Nutria' Ned & "Natty Nutria" Willie. Throughout history, the nutria has been acknowledged as one of the most prolific muses for musicians and artists. Recent discoveries in ancient Greek temples have shown representations of nutria in many different capacities: helping crush enemies, showing the ancient heroes how to build ships & temper their weapons, teaching the poets how to rhyme (although let it be noted that, probably because of their short attention span, the nutria told Homer to keep it short and sweet, so they are not to blame.), etc., etc. A previously unknown work by Michaelanglo has been recovered, showing five larger-than-life nutria being handed by a handsome youth to an aristocratic young woman. It is assumed now that nutria were given as a courting gift, symbolizing fertility and wealth.

I just posted a review of the Thurston Democrats' forum on health care last Monday at TC Blue. The discussion at the forum was pretty interesting, we had a pretty good panel. The crowd was light, but then again, it was a nice evening.

Thurston County Blue is the about month-old blog of the Thurston Democrats. The purpose of which is to foster the same kind of open, community discussion that we have here among Democrats. Check it out.
