Coal Beautaire is Adrinne from Nevada City who plays piano and sings amazing songs. She will also be singing with June Madrona for this show and the portland show. Ciel is olympia's own brendan and trevor. I've heard them progress over the last year from being a really good highschool band to just a really good band. don't miss this show!

the flick's posterIgnorant Movie Review:  Volver

Response to title:  ?

Response to curbside poster:  Wow.  Red and lush.  Looking at the poster is a near sensory overload.  The red is thick, which, following notions of color symbolism, leads me to believe this is a film about passions.

Response post-credits:  Beautiful.  Absolutely stunning.  The film is beautifully conceived, acted, directed, shot and rendered.  I find myself wanting to talk forever about this film, and to tell nothing about it in advance.  Here's my happy medium:  pay attention to the use of the color red and its possible meanings (important!), laugh even when it may seem inappropriate, and enjoy watching a master (Pedro Almodóvar) play with the conventions of Suspense (pay special attention to the score and what happens away from the camera lens). My one warning about this film is for anyone who loathes reading subtitles; the film is in Spanish with English subtitles.  Go see this movie, it's a masterpiece.

Rating:  4.9 out of 5 Oly Stubbies.

Film Haiku:  Smell the memory

                  dusting a graveyard.

The Second Planning Meeting on the Pedestrian Interference Ordinance Response is set for Wednesday evening at 6:30 at the Olympia Free School.

Marylea and I will probably be at Ben Moore's about 5:30. We have a deal worked out at Ben's with our favorite bartender Marcie.  We throw money on the bar and she pours the beer.  I think we have pull with Marcie, so we can probably persuade Marcie to extend this deal to you if you show up.

I think I read somewhere that the alcohol in the beer helps cut the cholesterol in the burgers and fries.

You never know who you will see at Ben's, but Marcie is pretty dependable.

The simple picket sign is attached as pdf file.

This Saturday and Sunday I spent significant part of my weekend recording the Citizens' hearing on the legality of U.S. actions in Iraq at Evergreen's Tacoma campus.  Today, I spent a significant part of my day editing these audio files... and I am still not done!  Regardless, the audio from the second day is posted now.  In the near future I will post the first day as well which includes retired Colonel Ann Wright and Daniel Ellsberg who released the Pentagon Papers.

I highly suggest listening to Dennis Kyne and the Iraq Veterans Against the War.  Antonia Juhasz is very good as well.

I'll come back and edit this later (or add a longer response), but Senator Jim Webb is hitting the nail on the head in the Democratic Response about why those of military-age serve in the Armed Forces without question.

It's out of loyalty to the country, not a political belief.

the flick's posterIgnorant Movie Review: Death of a President

Response to title:  Having heard about this movie prior to its theatrical release this review is another with more preconceptions than I would've liked.  At least most of what I have heard about the movie regards the controversy rather than the content, so I'll liken going into this movie with reading my first Daniel Steele novel after hearing nothing but bad things from other writer types; I'm fighting to keep an open mind amidst a storm of criticism.

Response to curbside poster:  This immediately calls up some of the black & white images of the Robert Kennedy assassination to me.

Response post-credits:  I'm torn about this film.  I applaud the artistic vision behind approaching the subject of George Bush Jr.'s assassination (October 19, 2007) as a Documentary.  In that vein, the story is linearly cogent and the casting was excellent; as no member of the cast is extremely well known, suspension of disbelief is far more possible, and the acting is solid-to-superb.  The narrative Documentary format, while good for creating an atmosphere of honest retrospection, does, at times, take on made-for-t.v. docudrama aspects (the protester and interrogating officer stand out to me ), but otherwise is a good vehicle for questioning the scope of post 9-11 internal American policies as well as for subtly pointing out some ideological inconsistencies of our government and citizenry.  Of course, the choice of this particular vehicle for conveying these notions is also the film's greatest weakness, in my mind.  Knowing the film covers the fictional assassination of a sitting American President, are the people who would benefit the most from a critical examination of American policy going to watch?  If there's a line on this bet in Vegas, I'd bet no.  It makes me tired watching somebody make a painting for a dark room.

I posted on this apparently taboo topic awhile ago and just dug up some more stuff:

Here's Boing Boing's rather disappointing coverage.
