Now, I've been known to have a rather colorful vocabulary, but I just read a word I had not seen in a long time. I'm flipping through the docent posts and low and behold is this cuchieeddie person. I won't repeat the first part of his post, but the qualifying word that he uses is "dingleberry". I didn't realize that this was a word used outside of grade school. Where do folks come up with these?!

I will not comment further on the obvious fact I am posting under my own name...

I will comment on the joys of watching a great storm roll through this morning. I love the wind and storms, all the more so because I live on my boat, close to nature. Monday always being a day off I simply did nothing except surf the web, and it felt good.

I've said in other places about issues I had with the OPD and how they were resolved to mutual satisfaction, some of which I wanted to discuss here.

I would welcome some discussion on what I raised elsewhere though. Mainly making complaints to the OPD, and the lawful peaceable open carrying of a sidearm. A person can learn much of my identity elsewhere on the web by reading up on open carry issues, but I am not going to "break cover" here for the moment, nor am I going to talk about my job as I do elsewhere on the web.

I had to push enough buttons to get here, so am a bit tired to add much more content today excepting replying to anything I have already written...

It's that time of year again. It seems like every year around T'day and Christmas I think about signing back up with the armed forces. 2 years ago I had a recruiter with all the paperwork ready before I backed out because of other obligations.

So in that spirit, tell me some horror stories about basic training, AIT, and Korea so I will stay home! :)

Although I'm not sure that Olycop would have minded (and maybe someone got private information saying he did), I'd like to compliment the docents on the decision to pull that blog.

I didn't get to know him that well, but I do recall he had a fairly sharp sense of humor and I'm thinking that he could probably have taken the ribbing, but it was close to harassing and a little too personal. Olyblog doesn't need to open that can of worms.

Now someone find the post where either Norm, Gug, or Merwyn posted the picture of me disguised as Wilford Brimley and delete it.  I don't want to hounded by photograph and autograph requests.

I've enjoyed working as a docent here. Rick has nurtured this community blog from the beginning, I think this place rocks. All the docents here and community members who treasure this place.....we all do the best we can to co-create this wonderful shared space. I am grateful to you all.

Time for me to step aside. OlyBlog keeps rolling, we have new members daily, new docents will come on board, Thanks everybody.

from wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Civil_disobedience

Civil disobedience:

Civil disobedience is an active refusal to obey certain laws, demands and commands of a government, or of an occupying power, without resorting to physical violence. It is one of the primary tactics of nonviolent resistance. In its most nonviolent form (known as ahimsa or satyagraha) it could be said that it is compassion in the form of respectful disagreement.

The following is from this thread, needs to be untangled and presented on its own.

More detail...

"Would you feel comfortable describing it in more detail?" Rick I think you know where I would be comfortable describing it in more detail. Something turned off about three hours after I registered. I said I would not post in the open on someone else's blog. It is not the place to hijack their posting, as I am almost certain what I did and what happened will end up hijacking this thread. I have no problems sharing in all it's Technicolor Glory what happened to me, in fact I have done so on another website where such things as I was doing at the time of the stop are discussed. I will be happy to share, but not by taking over someone else's thread. Private messages will get some info. You want the whole story, I need a place to share it. Time from complaint to conclusion 3 weeks, concluded to the benefit of myself and the OPD gained a bit from it too...

Interesting stuff. I enjoyed this letter.

The protesters in Olympia are misguided as they seek to interrupt the shipment of war equipment to or from Fort Lewis.

I remember pre-World War II and the military actions that followed and the feelings that spread throughout the country. We were a proud country. We had survived a desperate depression. Pride swelled among us, and we almost unanimously took actions in defense of our country following the attack on Dec. 7, 1941. I remember the pride of women who went to work because many felt it was their patriotic duty, not because they liked war.

We went to movies for entertainment not to protest the war, and many young men lied about their age in order to enlist.

But we are a different country now. Protesters even object to arresting illegal aliens. Somehow, when we are asked to make certain sacrifices, that is intolerable. Now, when we are asked to make a few sacrifices it does not fit the protesters strange standards. If we disagree with our government, we don’t write to our elected officials and present out views. Instead, we protest oblivious to the dangers we now face. How sad to see the conduct of protesters in the winter of my life.

America is a great country, and I thank God for it.

This is the first in a series of Washington State gubernatorial might-have-beens.

The first Governor of Washington was actually elected during the twilight of Washington's territorial days, Oct. 1, 1889 in preparation for Washington's statehood status, granted on the following month, Nov. 11. The election pitted two former territorial governors against each other: Elisha Ferry (Republican) and Eugene Semple (Democrat). The campaign lasted less than a month and there was never any doubt who the victor would be. It was a Republican year.

Eugene Semple was born in Colombia while his father served there as a diplomat. According to An Illustrated History of the State of Washington (1893), Semple was born "June 12, 1840, a son of James and Mary S. (Mizner) Semple, of Illinois. The father served as Attorney General, Speaker of the House of Representatives, Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, Senator in Congress and Colonel in the Black Hawk war in his adopted State. But at the time of his son's birth he was United States Minister to New Grenada. He served two terms in that position, first under Van Buren, and then under Tyler. The Semple family have long been prominently connected with the affairs of the Pacific coast. James Semple, father of our subject, made speeches in the Mississippi Valley, as early as 1842, in favor of the claim of the United States to the line of 54† 40' north latitude. January 8, 1844, he introduced into the United States Senate a resolution requesting the President to give notice to his Britannic Majesty of the desire of the Government of the United States to abrogate the treaty of joint occupancy of the Oregon country. His brother, Robert Semple, was editor of the first American newspaper printed in California; was president of the Constitutional Convention of that State; and founded the city of Benicia. A half brother of our subject, Hon. Lansing B. Mizner, was a California pioneer of 1849, held many official positions, including that of Collector of' the Port of San Francisco; President of State Senate, and Presidential Elector and Minister to Central America. A cousin of the subject of this sketch, Will Semple Green, was one of the founders of the city of Colusa, California, and for thirty-five years has been editor of the Colusa Sun, in which capacity he has yielded a potent influence in public affairs. Another uncle, Colonel Charles Donald Semple, of Colusa, was one of the most prominent members of the California bar."
