Here's how one newspaper described the 1896 Republican candidate for Washington State Governor as election season started: "Sullivan's biography, so far as is known, was never written. His father was the late P.C. Sullivan, Sr., a prominent lawyer in the early days of this country. How old the candidate for governor is cannot be stated in the absence of authoritative data. He is thought to be about thirty-five. His boyhood was spent in Oregon. His family removed from there to Whitman County, where 'Charley,' as everybody calls him, was admitted to the bar at Colfax. The elder Sullivan was a prominent figure at the bar in Territorial days ..." Obviously, this was before the days of professional spin artists.

In retrospect I was over the top on my Meta Hogan comments. I was going to make a formal apology, but at this point would look like ass kissing. Dissent seems okay only when directed at certain people/events/ideals otherwise in typical hypocritcal OlyLiberal fashion if you direct dissent at the radical left, you get shot down. I got four messages today about what I had posted on Olyblog last night, the most I have gotten to date about my posts. Three were supportive, and one was a finger shaking "naughty naughty" 3 out of 4 aint' bad in my book. The picture below is meant as humor and sarcasm. If you can't laugh at that, you probably have no soul.

This movie was brought up and praised in another thread. I wanted talk about it, so as to not hijack that thread, here we go.
» I thought this was another miss in Ridley Scott's hit or miss career. The glorification of Washington's character in this movie was egregious. Read his story and you will uncover a monster who killed a lot of people by his own hand, through his orders, and who the hell knows how many through the massive amounts of intensely strong dope his people sold. The movie was poorly made despite that. Scott should have cut a lot more out of this movie than he did, but chose to go for epic length without epic quality (do we really need to see Denzel eating dinner and not saying a word? did that advance the story?) Little things bothered also. Scott, as accomplished and experienced a director as he is should not allow mistakes to show through like he did in this movie (green leaves on the trees in the middle of a New York winter). Mostly my problem is with the story and how it's told. This would have been a much better movie had it made the villian (Washington) into the villain, and the hero (Russell Crowe) into the hero. It made them both the hero and in the end Scott can't make it work. DeNiro and Pacino were able to pull this off in Heat, Crowe and Washington aren't in American Gangster. Their one on one relationship paints them as allies, Crowe wants to bust the crooked cops, Washington wants to help him, mostly to save his own ass. All in all this was an entertaining movie to watch, if you are able to forget the true stories behind the characters, and are able to forgive Scott for making it at least a half an hour too long.

An Olybloggger recently posted something related to Phil Kline, the former AG of Kansas who tried and is still trying to get the court to reveal the identities of women getting abortions at a particular clinic. Crooks and Liars has a couple of updates on the fellow. The second two links are videos, so just right click them and "save as" if you want to watch.

My wife and I get our drinking water from the downtown well. We have always trusted this water. Last year, I noticed that when I poured a glass of well water into a mason jar and left it out overnight, the water had a strange "chemically" smell. The water on my desk, left over from yesterday, has the same smell. Has anyone else smelled something funny?
