Tomorrow's our deadline, Oly.  Like the artesian aquifer which flows beneath our feet, we seek to dispense rather than covet the wisdom that flows from our Commons knowledge.

Please send submissions to:  oolyps(at)gmail(dot)com.  Assuming no technical difficulties, our advice pours out late Sunday.

Getaway bus

A few days ago I saw a tour bus pulled over to the side of the road on I5. On the side of the bus was the word "Getaway." I guess it was getting a speeding ticket. I felt sorry for the poor tourists who were have their fantasy vacation to south Puget Sound interrupted by this run in with the law. Then I thought, maybe the cop misunderstood and thought the bus was making a getaway from a crime. Maybe it was!

They would need to be pretty dumb criminals to label their getaway vehicle like that though. I guess I'll never know.

On Friday, March 30, 2007, the defendants and their supporters held a demonstration outside the Thurston County courthouse at 1pm. The event will protest the unjust treatment of the defendants and the surveillance of the group by federal agents. video link.

The trial of 15 defendants, arrested at The Port of Olympia during  eleven days of protest in May of 2006 ended in mistrial on Thursday March 29th,2007. The group, formerly known as the “Olympia 22”, was arrested on misdemeanor charges of criminal trespass. Allegedly the defendants crossed onto Port property while peacefully demonstrating against the use of the Port of Olympia for military shipments.

Detective Mike Hirte, along with his supervisor Jim Chamberlain of the Thurston County Sheriffs Office, interrupted proceedings and presented Prosecutor Steve Straume with case – sensitive information obtained from the defendants’ confidential email list.  Detective Hirte had been present at the Port of Olympia protests in May 2006 and at the time had identified himself as a Department Homeland Security agent. When questioned by defendants at the conclusion of trial on March 29, 2007 he refused to identify himself or give his badge number.

Testimony up to this point had included four police or security officers, two of whom were impeached by the defense during cross examination for making inconsistent or untrue statements. According to a discussion with jurors directly after the declaration of the mistrial the majority of the jury was inclined to vote not guilty due to the lack of credible and unbiased witnesses

Profiles of the jury pool were sent to an email list that included defendants, lawyers, former defendants, and other members of the legal team. The information discussed through email is protected under attorney-client privilege.  This information was inadvertently sent to about 10 former defendants. The defense team immediately noted the error and sent an email to unauthorized recipients instructing them to disregard and to delete  that email. The defense sought solutions to the situation that would not result in a mistrial, however the judge refused to hear further defense solutions, including calling in all 10 unauthorized recipients to testify under oath that they did not disseminate this information and to agree to disregard and destroy the document.

Here is where I am coming from: I myself have had experience in destructive groups/cults, the Ramtha School of Enlightenment qualifies as a destructive group, and I hope everyone makes it out alive. (A good place to learn from ex-members is on the factnet.org Ramtha board.) This is my bias. Plus snark may be involved.

The restaurant Cielo Blu (514 Capitol Way) is advertising a Spring Fling Speed Dating Event:

Cielo Blu, is hosting a speed dating evening in downtown Olympia. Men and women between the ages of 35 - 50 are invited to participate in 15 x 5 minute dates! The entire restaurant will be devoted to this evening. And, depending on the numbers and range of ages, the restaurant may be divided into two sections. The fee will cover entry along with a selection of tasty bites showcasing Cielo Blu's dancing flavors.

Cielo Blu (google translation says that is Italian for "Blue Sky") is listed on the mastersconnection.com site as one of many businesses owned "by students and friends of RSE". I haven't eaten there yet and I encourage any readers here who have to chime in with restaurant reviews. A review through the News Tribune was mixed, other reviews found elsewhere also are not that encouraging. Hopefully everything has improved, the more decent restaurants Oly has the better.

Ironically from an email:

Olympia 22 trial ended in a mistrial today, Thursday, March 29.

There will still be a rally at the Thurston County Courthouse on Friday at 1 PM, in order to protest the dirty tricks committed by the Prosecutors Office and the Sheriffs Office. But the trial itself is over for now.

More details about the trial are coming, but here's a brief summary:

The trial began on Monday, and by the time of the mistrial, we still hadn't been halfway through the case. The prosecution was still presenting its arguments, and the defense hadn't presented its own arguments yet. However, after the mistrial, the jury informed us that from what was presented, they were already 7 to 1 in favor of a Not Guilty verdict.

The prosecution had introduced witnesses who gave inconsistent information. One police officer on the witness stand was even caught lying when it came to testimony about a destroyed videotape.

The trial was full of Hollywood-style courtroom drama every day, and it got weirder and weirder as the week went on. Yesterday the court session ended early because the prosecutor had a breakdown and couldn't continue. Motions were filed everyday for a mistrial, and it was just a matter of time before it would happen.

Today the mistrial was declared after a secretive Thurston County Detective Mike Hirte entered the courtroom to present the prosecution with an email stolen from the defense team's private email list.

The email itself wasn't incriminating, but it had inadvertently been sent out to a few people who shouldn't have received it. Neither the prosecution nor Mike Hirte, who does cyber forensics for the Thurston County Sheriffs Office (and who had simply identified himself as "Homeland Security" at the Port protests last year), explained how they themselves got a hold of the email.

We do know, however, that Mike Hirte or someone who works in his team have been spying on our email lists.

Saw this email earlier this week and I haven't heard anything more this week:

Dear WROC and Community Members,

On Monday I received a letter from WROC's Board of Directors informing me that my position as Olympia Organizer will be subject to indefinite layoff due to lack of funds and organizational restructuring, effective Monday, April 2nd, 2007.  They thanked me for my contributions and wished me success in finding alternative employment.  WROC's director, our only other staff member, received an identical letter.  They have not presented either of us with a plan as to how they will to meet WROC's commitments without staff.
