Apr 23 2007 - 5:30pm Apr 23 2007 - 9:00pm St. John's Episcopal Church Parish Hall 114 20th Ave SE On the corner of 20th and Capitol Way S in Olympia's South Capitol Neighborhood On Tuesday, April 17th, a proposal was heard on the official recognition of Olympia-Rafah Sister City Project by the Olympia City Council. During the public comment period, many comments and actions were taken demonstrating ignorance and intolerance in our own community. The resolution was opposed by the city council 2 to 1. Please view the video of the hearing at http://olympia.granicus.com As we consider what we are doing on a larger scale to bring about a just peace, we need to consider what we are doing in our own community to create understanding and challenge racism. If you are concerned about racism please join us at a potluck hosted by Olympians for Peace in the Middle East for a facilitated discussion about the city council meeting this last week and future actions to be taken. This May Day in Oly, was a day off in celebration of our lives and a renewal of what it may feel for us to truly be free and be at liberty to do whatever we please in our city and streets and do no harm and not comply to the belief in blood oil or the WAR.

Sarah's note: This is one of several May Days in Olympia I've participated in over the years. I learned a valuable lesson on the lawn of the Armory while flying People's Air Force paper airplanes around - always wear sunblock. It was warm and gorgeous outside and I got so burnt. Word to the wise.
» Marching to the beat of several different drummers, about 300 people celebrated May Day in the streets of Olympia with a peaceful demonstration at the National Guard Armory. Olympia May Day rally attracts 300 People danced, children played, and we got some sun in Oly. Joey Casio rocked out as well as another band with the former lead singer of Rainbow Sugar out rapping the white boy rappers on hand. This is important because the 3rd Circuit is seen as more fair and balanced than other courtrooms - Mumia's attorney feels he has a better chance of getting what he is fighting for from the 3rd Circuit - a new trail and then, his freedom! Read on:

Apr 26 2007 - 6:00pm Apr 26 2007 - 9:00pm Come hear the latest legislation news! The session would have been completed and initiatives passed. We are all looking for great changes! Thursday, April 26th. 6:00 pm light refreshments provided by A Child’s Place Preschool, program begins at 6:30. A panel of legislators and early childhood education specialists will discuss what has been happening in the most current legislative session, what that means and what is next. Olympia Friends Meeting House – also the home of A Child’s Place Preschool 219 “B” Street (corner of B Street and 2nd Ave.) Tumwater, WA Some of the issues we are starting to address this legislative session: ⇒ Kindergarten teachers reported that over 50% of Washington State children are not ready for school. ⇒ Development happens in the brain for a young child that cannot be fully made up at any age. ⇒ Caregivers, families, teachers need easy access to information and training on the education of the young child from birth. ⇒ Early Childhood Professionals need economic career wage ladders in par with early elementary teachers to stay in the field. ⇒ The time and money spent “catching these children up” is enormous ⇒ Many children who start out unprepared leave school unprepared for the work force and/or college ⇒ Early Childhood development is an economic investment which provides high public return. ⇒ Early Childhood care is not babysitting. ⇒ Parents cannot shoulder all the cost of Early Childhood education. ⇒ Special Education preschools within the elementary school system need support. |
