Whoa. I've been watching local blogs for awhile now and usually I don't spy any distinct trends. We are diverse bloggers with diverse interests. But it is only a few hours after Jerry Falwell's death and local bloggers are already weighing in.

Above are three examples, they all have comments enabled so go forth and join in the conversation.

A Mother’s Song

I am the womb in every moon that blooms so high above;
I am a mother suckling her newborn babe in love—
I am the voice you turn to when you need an ear;
I am the strength that guides through each and every fear.

Look into the future and see in it the sun,
And look to the past to see how far you’ve come—
Rest in the shadows and dance naked in the rain,
And let it wash your soul free of any pain.

No, not a gun. Although after all this talk I'm really tempted to buy a new one.

Today I received in the mail, "An Inconvenient Truth" with former Vice President Mr. Al Gore. I'm not sure if I will watch it tonight, as I plan on asking friends if they care to watch it, but as soon as I do I will leave a short review and possibly....QUITE possibly mention that maybe ol' Al isn't such a bad guy. Don't hold your breath though.

For anyone that hasn't experienced it: YAY Netflix!

Ignorant Movie Review: Red Road

Response to title: Red rum, red rum, red rum! And red = passion & deceipt.

Response to curbside poster: I forgot to look again, which worked out well as the image is littered with high praise.

Response post-credits: I am so glad we Olympians have something like the O.F.S. to bring us movies like this, what a masterpiece. Andrea Arnold takes what should merely be a cinematically beautiful drama and so artfully applies the elements of suspense that the audience is led through a series of paradigm shifts in the space of 113 minutes. The first clue of this impending and forceful transplant is immediately given in the opening credits as we are uprooted from our own temporality and brought to watch Glascow unfold itself into humanity. Not once did I feel like it let go of me, rather, at the end I only wanted to see it again.

The title holds true as red is everywhere, but other colors provide us equal insight into the film's subject. Notice how often strong colors overlay a stark white background; white being the symbolic color of purity and innocense these colors represent the mutable reality of a tabula rasa and mimic the audience's ever increasing pool of insight. Notice too the physical manifestations of these symbolic colors and their placement in the narrative: passion, deceipt, despair, guilt, anguish, acceptance, etc. Nothing feels unintended, and everything is in the details.

This is a breathtaking film and I encourage everyone to go see it at the Capitol Theater.

Rating: 4.85 out of 5 Oly Stubbies.

Ignorant Movie Review: Venus

Response to title: The second planet from our sun. The Roman Goddess of fertility, love and beauty.

Response to curbside poster: Good. I felt disappointed after Lassie, so I was hoping that wouldn't be my final cinematic memory of Peter O'Toole.

Response post-credits: While I don't think this is a great movie, the nuanced treatment of Goddess traits beauty, fertility and love, combined with the outstanding and witty performances by all of the older thespians, made it well worth watching. Peter O'Toole plays an aged actor playing aged and dying roles at the end of his career in between hanging out with other aged actors and a budding Venus, the cinematic equivalent of standing in front a mirror with a mirror behind you. The performances really do make this movie, and I presume it has something to do with the immediacy of the script's relevance to the cast. I would recommend this film to most people, and especially to fans of Peter O'Tooole. Besides, I do appreciate the fact that I will never look the same way at a woman standing up through a limosine sunroof again.

Rating: 3.05 out of 5 Oly Stubbies.

If I absolutely have to be miserable with full blown allergies, I at least take consolation when I read the words "VERY HIGH" on the local current pollen report . Not that I want anyone else feeling this bad, but still. Those words help moderate my mood.

I figure by now I am an expert on sniffling and sneezing. Entertaining -both- allergies and a cold at the same time does that to a person. Here is what I know:

Over one hundred people showed up to Tenino High School last night to talk about a new logistics center in south county, and why most of them (I assume) don't like the idea. This is the second time I've noticed a major issue attracting a lot of attention (first was the port protests) that doesn't seem to be inspiring anyone to actually run for port commission.

If you disagree  with the Logistics Center near Tenino, you should run for port commission.

The main opposition group to the planned center is Friends of Rocky Prairie, and on their website section regarding "What you can do," it doesn't list running for an elected office that would actually be able to decide whether to eventually go forward with development of the center. One incumbent quoted throughout the Olympian story, Bob Van Schoorl, represents the district (District 1) that would most directly be effected by the center.

Running as an anti-logistics center candidate would not only raise the profile of the issue, but when push came to shove, would possible give a voice to local residents.
