The supposed tunnels in Hewitt Lake leading to the Sound interested me, and in the course of investigation I ran across the following. This is from the Daily Olympian, Dec. 26, 1976:

H-Hewitt Lake---
H-Haunted Or Not?

By Dorris Hensel

When the winter mist snags the fir tops and obscures the far shores of Thurston County lakes in ghostly vapors, it takes only a small stretch of the imagination to see shadows of the things that were, when deer came to drink at water's edge and a stalking cougar padded near.

At such times, before the fog lifts and we see the houses which now cram the perimeters, some lakes seem almost haunted. One, Hewitt Lake, located southeast of Tumwater, was once believed to be obsessed [note-- perhaps she meant "possessed"].

The transition is now complete. Special thanks to Nat and Jay at Zhonka. I want to acknowledge that Zhonka is donating hosting services, so keep in mind that they are a strong supporter of local community when you choose your broadband services.

Unfortunately, we did lose some content in the transition (just a few things, I hope). Please repost anything that you find is missing.

There are some more improvements coming down the pike, so stay tuned for more functionality. Please let me know if there is anything we can do to make the blog better.

Just got a copy of the Book Last Child in the Woods: Saving Our Children From Nature Deficit Disorder and started reading it today. It is reinforcing a lot of ideas I knew to be true, having grown up in forested seclusion, and helping me realize a whole skill set of which I was only vaguely conscious until recently. Will toss up a review upon completion (which at my current speed of reading might be one or two months unfortunately). In the meantime, here's what the web has to say:

Military shipments are being run through the Port of Grays Harbor, Aberdeen. The Daily World has the story: Military equipment continues to arrive.

Read The Rambling Taoists for commentary and research. Trey lives in Aberdeen and is blogging about these shipments.

Free speech ain't what it used to be. I stopped by the local police department yesterday to find out where our fine law enforcement people plan to ALLOW protesters to exercise our cherished first amendment rights. They are providing us with a freshly mowed field. What do they think we are? Grazing cattle?

Trey has more at Section 8.08.020. Comments are enabled there for discussion.
