May 15 2007 - 6:00pm May 15 2007 - 8:00pm The Evergreen State College Student Groups The Center for Environmental and Natural Skills Education and The Environmental Resource Center Present: Surviving and Thriving, on the Edge of Civilization: ~With Nikki van Schyndel~ Nikki van Schyndel, an accomplished herbalist, artist tracker, primitive artisan and author, spent a year and a half living off the land on a deserted island in British Columbia, and learning volumes from that living. What does it feel like to eat only what you have gathered or honorably hunted? What do you do if you hurt yourself and the closest telephone is a 10 mile row away? What does it feel like to live directly, in the moment, with only your abilities and attitude keeping you alive? On Tuesday May 15 from 6 to 8pm, in Lecture Hall 5 at the Evergreen State College, Nikki will present breathtaking stories from her experience, and speak to what survival means in this day in age, and how we can incorporate living with the earth into our lifestyles: however we love to live. This event is $3 for students, $5 general admission, or an equivalent non-perishable food donation for Camp Quiote. For more info, e-mail cense@evergreen.edu or call 360-867-6784. ...purchase the Safeway location, and turn it into a Center for the Performing Arts... ...With a stage and PA... ...Oly style... Then we could have weekly musical presentations, theatrical presentations, an arts gallery, and a creation space for events like Procession of the Species.. Any thoughts? If we all lobbied hard enough maybe we could make it happen!

Word on the street early today was that the Downtown Safeway would be closing. So after a few quick calls and confirmation rom the store manager, I can tell you that yes, the store will close in June. The Downtown Safeway opened in 1962 and is one of the few stores with the old school design. The manager said the store is to small to meet the demands of the Safeway " Lifestyle" stores and that the building needs a ton of work It really is a shame to lose such a convience but at the same time there are some good elements. Now is the time for the Olympia Food Co-op board to take advantage of this opportunity and aquire the lease on this space before one of the corporate giants steps in with the ever so popular "Organic" Stores that have invaded the Co-op scene. I say to all of you that want a decent store in the Downtown, call the Co-op office or tell them at the stores that we need them Downtown

That building would make a much better residence than a tent city, in my view. I could see it being turned into apartment like rooms with community showers/restrooms. Other positives: * Parking lot could be turned into a "front yard" * Already full of freezers and cold stroage for perishable goods * Lots of other storage for dry goods and cans * Admin offices already exist I have no idea about the cost, but I'm guessing Safeway owns it. If there was a city and group of people who could turn this into a successful lobbying effort and resulting project, it's Olympia, the PPU, and their supporters.

Twitter is a social networking and micro-blogging service that allows users to send "updates" (text-based posts, up to 140 characters long) via SMS, instant messaging, the Twitter website... You can open a free Twitter account and join in the Olympia dominates the web efforts that I just now invented. I'm EpiphanyS on Twitter and so far I've found one other Olympian - theunabonger. The application I am extra enthused about is twitterfeed. You can easily feed your blog here on OlyBlog or elsewhere through this service to Twitter. Which means more folks potentially will check out your blog posts. Which adds to our (my) efforts towards Olympia taking over the web, but of course. |
