I hope Sunday is nice. I hope Lakefair can recover from the recent weather woes. I'll be there rain or shine - last day and we haven't made it down yet.

But what about all that leftover food, especially if tomorrow is like today? I have an unofficial, off the record, verbal balance sheet from one of the non-profit booths. They are doing $800 a day in gross sales. Expectations were for $3000 a day. The amount of food that will go to waste is too much to swallow (ha, ha!). What should be done with all that food? Split it evenly among area food banks and local social service centers.

The following passage is something I found in Lights and Shades on Pioneer Life by George E. Blankenship (1923). In this bit he describes an Olympia scene during the American Civil War:

"The residents of Olympia were intensely patriotic during the Rebellion. There was a minority from the border states who entertained Southern sympathy, but they were undemonstrative. One night when news of an important Union victory had been received two prominent citizens, fired with patriotic zeal and liquified enthusiasm, bought up all the visible supply of powder in town, went to the foot of Main street, where stood an old canon that had been dumped there by a revenue cutter in Indian war time. This gun they proceeded to put into action by placing it in position in the middle of the street aiming north and proceeded to fire. Following each recoil of the gun they proceeded up Main street, until they reached the front of the saloon owned by one of the gunners. Here they paused for refreshment."

"They took one drink, maybe more. Anyway their enthusiasm had increased considerably and they increased the charge for the gun proportionately, the concussion from which put the saloon man out of business until he could replenish his stock of glass and tumblers. In fact shingles were the prevailing fashion in window sashes along Main street until the next San Francisco steamer arrived. But good citizens accepted the destruction as right and absolutely necessary as a proper expression of their gratification over a Union victory."

Today's contribution from a reader/commenter on The O:

"I don't care what they SAID Emma. It's all just lip service. They're politians and their track record says it all. Actions speak louder than words. If you honestly believe that they voted that way for financial reasons then you are deluded. Just don't expect the rest of us to share that delusion.

Hobo Radio is a weekly program on 106.5 KOWA low power radio in Olympia Washington hosted by Joshua Ratliff. It began in September 2006 as a show dedicated to alternative travel methods including hitchhiking, train-hopping, and alternative fuels.

After the Olympia City Council passed an ordinance banning the act of sitting on the sidewalks, Hobo Radio expanded its format to include homeless advocacy. The anti-sitting ordinance was created to target homeless people as an attempt to lower the number of homeless in Olympia. The homeless in Olympia responded to the ordinance by establishing a "tent city" in downtown Olympia. The tent city was called "Camp Quixote" and has since moved it's location twice. Hobo Radio has been a supporter of Camp Quixote since its inception and strives to keep up to date on new developments and news.

Hobo Radio is also a music show with a variety of music genres that range from bluegrass and punk rock to hip-hop and reggae. The music all has a similar theme of freedom and resistance of oppression. Every so often, Hobo Radio also features live music by local and traveling street performers.

Hobo Radio is also about hobos and features hobo history, music, and guests.

About the Host of Hobo Radio

Joshua Ratliff (known as "ontheroad" on OlyBlog) is a homeless outreach worker that has over 10 years of experience living homeless by choice and has traveled the country as a modern hobo.

KOWA-lp 106.5 is a low power radio station in Olympia, Washington and is a project of Media Island International, a non-profit 501(c)(3) corporation.

Hobo Radio airs every Thursday from 7:00pm to 9:00pm

Do you ride the bus? I haven’t in a long time but I used to ride it a lot when I lived out by black lake and was finishing up school at Evergreen.

One time I was riding the bus and some younger passengers at the front were talking to a developmentally disabled man, who had an uncanny knack for directions.

“How do you get to Omaha?”, someone would ask.

What followed was a complete set of directions from the Capital mall to Omaha, NE…

Whatever place someone named, this guy could give you exact directions. I’ll bet he still rides the bus and can give you directions to anywhere in the world.

That guy rocks! I love Oly.

From the Full Focus website:

We Are Them
The Words of Rachel Corrie 7/24/07 In 2003 Rachel Corrie was crushed to death when she was run over by an Israeli Defense Force bulldozer. The words that Rachel Corrie wrote became a window to a far away and forgotten place and brought attention to the myriad of human rights violations happening in the Gaza strip. Her words and her death have become mired in controversy, but her story reminds us that from Western Washington to the Middle East, we are all brothers and sisters, and that no one is truly free while others are oppressed.

There is a preview of this episode at the site below. http://www.kbtc.org/ fullfocus/This%20Week.html

The show will air Tuesday 7/24 at 7:30pm on KBTC channel 12
