In "Measuring the Health of Nations: Updating an Earlier Analysis" (Health Affairs, Jan./Feb. 2008), Ellen Nolte, Ph.D., and C. Martin McKee, M.D., D.Sc., both of the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, compared international rates of "amenable mortality"—that is, deaths from certain causes before age 75 that are potentially preventable with timely and effective health care. In addition to the U.S., the study included 14 Western European countries, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, and Japan. According to the authors, if the U.S. had been able reduce amenable mortality to the average rate achieved by the three top-performing countries, there would have been 101,000 fewer deaths annually by the end of the study period.

Susie Asado (berlin, germany)
Susie Asado is a poem by Gertrude Stein. This Susie Asado is Josepha Conrad. She is not a poem although she likes to write them. She also likes Gertrude Stein. So much is apparent. You might know her from Crazy for Jane. You might know her from the park. You might have seen her in the movie Berlin Song. Josepha writes songs and she will sing them for you. Happily. Her songs are about geographic challenges about borders and border patrol about falling in love with border patrol and with countries and that is more than one country. She likes places such as Mexico although she has never been. She likes the word. She likes Olympia. For the O and the grandeur of it. She likes Berlin. She lives there. Her hometowns are Frankfurt am Main and

I know I have called on Oly blog readers for help to save Millerslyvania State Park and South Thurston Co. before, but now it is crunch time. We need as many names (not signatures) as we can before the port goes to the commissioners to tell them not to rezone. Please read the info below and if you are interested in saving this diverse ecosystem send your name and contact info (email OR phone number OR address)to alex.bertolucci@gmail.com. We will not call, email or mail you anything this is just to show your support for the environment. Just send your name and contact info. Thanks a ton! www.FriendsOfRockyPrairie.com

I was going to push the old listing with our new tracker, but it appears it's gone, so I'll re-post:

Larry Hill Quartet will be performing two shows on January 26th, starting at 8pm at Roberts 99th Street Restaurant and Lounge, 99th and Pacific Avenue in Tacoma.  With Larry will be Dave Croston on guitar and keyboards, Lee Gregory on keyboards and Pete Boardway on percussion.

No reservations are accepted, first come, first served on seating.

Nobody came right out and said they don't think that GW is happening, so we are on to the second question to consider. I think it is worth noting that even as recently as a year or two ago, republican types were still inclined to argue that the warming was not even happening. I guess it's encouraging that we don't encounter that level of denial today.

Saw a current article from the Washington Post - 2007 was again one of the warmest years ever since weather records have been kept.

It's been suggested by one clever Olyblogger that "Olympia is for hippies, Tumwater is for cowboys, and Lacey is for soldiers." Is Olympia a melting pot of countless viewpoints and cultures or is it one central voice with a minority undercurrent? Is Olympia's perspective changing in the face of the global shifts that have occurred since 9/11 (arguably since the election of 2000)?

Steeped in the ethos of the Bible Belt and still "fresh off the boat" from back East, I have not yet shaken a sense of strangeness--of things simultaneously familiar and foreign. As I posted in one reply, my husband (a native Northwesterner) offered my first clarification--the reconciliation of guns and environmentalism--when he offered the term "Ted Nugent hippies..."

Politics, religion, sex, all of the things that one should not discuss in polite conversation, are precisely the areas that I want to explore. What does it mean to be an Olympian?

If you haven't read this article, I suggest you click and have a good laugh. It's about Capital Lakefair revoking the title of one princess and the aftermath the decision has brought.

[Jessica Pacheco] showed printouts of Lakefair queen Maria Anne Noonan's page at myspace.com. The printouts show Noonan with a nose piercing in one photo and holding what appears to be a rifle in another while dressed in her Lakefair gown. On another page, Noonan apparently wrote, "I am better then you." Pacheco said that if her alleged violations get her kicked off the royal court, Noonan should get kicked off, too.

On the right hand side The Olympian has links to .pdf files with titles such as "Read the termination and scholarship reinstatement letters sent by the Capital Lakefair committee to the Pacheco family" and "View print-outs of Lakefair queen Marie Anna Noonan's MySpace page, as provided by the Pacheco family."

The comments are the best part, though. I was literally laughing at my computer.

"This is news? I wouldn't be surprized [sic] if the Daily Zero started their own reality show. They could call it 'The Search for Real Reporters and Editors.'"

"This is a serious issue for all of us in the community and let me assure you that Officer Trevor is on the case, and he will not rest until justice has been served. That is all."

"No wonder kids can't learn in school. Reading these posts make me realize that sending your kid to a local high school is like sending them to the vultures."
