Oct 25 2008 - 4:00pm Oct 25 2008 - 6:00pm DAVIS WAS SENTENCED TO DEATH IN 1991 FOR THE MURDER OF A WHITE POLICEMAN IN SAVANNAH. THERE WAS NO PHYSICAL EVIDENCE. NO MURDER WEAPON. ANOTHER MAN IS IMPLICATED. NOW, NO COURT IS WILLING TO HEAR THE NEW EVIDENCE. HIS EXECUTION DATE IS SET FOR OCT. 27 The Georgia Board of Pardons and Paroles denied clemency for Troy Anthony Davis shortly before 5 p.m. on Friday, September 12. They did so despite overwhelming doubts of Davis' guilt - and after stating last year that they would "not allow an execution to proceed in this State unless and until its members are convinced that there is no doubt as to the guilt of the accused." On September 23, The U.S. Supreme Court stayed Troy Davis' execution "pending the disposition of [his] petition for a writ of certiorari." On October 14, the Court decided not to accept his petition.

Fyi~good citizens of WA State. I only wish other states had a handle on election security as ours appears to have according to this video. Please feel free to comment on any "security breaches" you may feel could still be lurking in our state's next vote tally.

Google Transit overview looks really cool - integrates the transit schedule data with Google maps so you can get the transit options as part of a directions search, including one that says "I need to get there by the following time." It's available for Seattle now; I called Intercity Transit about it, and they're working on it. (Their first try with Google sent travelers on lots of trips that didn't exist, so they're trying to clean up their data now...). In the long run, they're hoping to integrate the whole Oly to Seattle system. Best,

The Friends of the Evergreen Library and The Deans welcome Tim Kelly to the Evergreen Library's Underground tomorrow, October 23, between noon and 1:15. (You go past the Circulation desk and down the stairs.) The second of this year's Brown Bag Series, Tim's reading draws from his latest collection of poetry - The Extremities - and his work as a physical therapist. Olympia poet Timothy Kelly has, in the last ten years, won the Field Poetry Prize, the Floating Bridge Press Chapbook Award, and a 2008 Artsmith Award. He has published widely in literary journals including The Iowa Review, The Northwest Review, and Image. His fourth collection of poems, The Extremities, was published in April by Oberlin College Press. He works day to day as a physical therapist, and his poetry springs from the beauty and complexity of the body. He lives on Henderson Inlet, and teaches periodically at TESC, including the upcoming Spring program titled Written in Stone. Best, |
