After the Seafood on Valentine's (Lobster, Prawns, Calamari), I was hankerin' to fix up a seafood chowder in the crock pot.

This was it.

1/2 LB of Prawns, grilled on the Geo. Foreman grill

1/2 LB of Scallops, grilled on the G.F. grill

2 cans of clams

5 slices of turkey bacon, broiled in the red Oster convection toaster oven

1 Quart of Organic Whole Milk

2 Large Organic Russet potatoes, diced and boiled

1 white onion, 1 head of garlic, sauteed in olive oil

Almost every week this is the "What's on the city council's plate this week" review. I don't cover everything, so if you want the full rundown, read the packet and agenda yourself.

Nothing much in the packet this week (maybe something about a "water plan" that I'll write about later, but it looks pretty daunting), except a little note from the "Committee of the Chairs" meeting on Tuesday night at 5p (report @ scribd):

There was preliminary discussion by and among 2007 Councilmembers about holding a Town Hall meeting on April 22 (Earth Day) at Olympia High School. The suggested topic was Climate Change/Sea Level Rise.

BACKGROUND: As part of the Council’s 2004 Open Government initiative, Councilmembers – at that time – committed to holding two Town Hall meetings each year on topics identified by the City Council.

A preliminary date and theme for April 22, 2008 was identified by the 2007 Council. No additional planning activity has occurred, and no meeting space has been reserved. The Olympia Center is not available on April 22.

It looks like they don't have anything to talk to us about. So, outside of sea leve rise, can anyone think of anything else they'd like to talk to the city council about?

Alice Rothchild, physician, activist and author of Broken Promises, Broken Dreams: Stories of Jewish and Palestinian Trauma and Resilience, will speak Tuesday, March 4th from 12-2 pm at The Evergreen State College, Seminar II, C1107 and again from 7-9 pm in at the Worthington Conference Center, St. Martin’s University, 5300 Pacific Avenue SE, in Lacey.

Dr. Rothchild describes her book as “… an intimate journey grappling with the complicated historical legacy of Israel and Palestine and my relationship to these issues as a Jewish American physician, grounded by the traumas of the Holocaust and my family's passionate love of Israel.” Broken Promises, Broken Dreams recounts her work with medical and human rights projects as she examines the reality of life in Israel , the complexity of Jewish Israeli identity and attitudes, and the hardships of Palestinians living in the West Bank and Gaza . Her evocative writing brings to life the voices of people mutually entwined in trauma, and explores individual examples of resilience and resistance.

In the past six months we have heard much discussion on Congressman Brian Baird and his public support for the “surge” military strategy in Iraq. Many people have disagreed with his decision and some accuse him of not appropriately representing his constituents. Well, it looks like the question “Is Congressman Baird representing the citizens of the 3rd Congressional District?” will get it’s real test this summer and fall.

More than one in 100 adults in the United States is in jail or prison, an all-time high that is costing state governments nearly $50 billion a year and the federal government $5 billion more, according to a report released yesterday.

With more than 2.3 million people behind bars, the United States leads the world in both the number and percentage of residents it incarcerates, leaving far-more-populous China a distant second, according to a study by the nonpartisan Pew Center on the States.
