Carol McKinney of the Olympia Unitarian Universalist Congregation and folks from Interfaith Works will be celebrating Moment of Blessing at the site 3400 block of Harrison where our homeless acquaintances died last week in a fire. Please attend, if you are able, to show solidarity with our brothers who have left us and to consider the tragic circumstances that led to their passing. If you are not able to attend, please pause for a moment and remember in your heart not only those who have left us, but the many, many among us who live in trying and dangerous circumstances.

The Arts Commission of the City of Olympia invites local artists and arts organizations to join a monthly community arts roundtable that will give participants the opportunity to exchange ideas, share experiences and create strong local support for their work. C-SPAN’s “Road to the White House” Bus Tour Hits Campaign Trail to Track Action in 2008 Presidential Election

WASHINGTON (March 26, 2008) – Evergreen State College students will join the thousands who have toured C-SPAN’s Campaign 2008 Bus as part of the “Road to the White House” tour, when the bus stops at Evergreen State College on Thursday, April 3 from 1:30pm-3:00pm.

The 45-foot mobile production studio is on the campaign trail to promote and enhance C-SPAN’s comprehensive political coverage, traveling to major political events such as candidate debates and speeches in early primary states, touring state capitols, and also conducting educational programs for teachers and students. Since its January 2007 launch, the bus has been to 32 state capitals and 95 schools, where 278 elected officials, 2,750 teachers and 21,650 students have been on board.

The Olympia event, in partnership with Comcast, is part of the Bus’s inaugural “Road to the White House” tour, named after C-SPAN’s renowned political program that marks its 20th year on the air in 2008.

So the ice is breaking off in big chunks. I wonder when all this melts, what it will mean as far as rising sea levels? Some have predicted the whole Ross Ice Shelf will collapse within 15 years. Will this be the trigger for major sea level rises?

Found this elsewhere on the net. I believe a lot of people will instinctively make some of the analaysis' in this article. Could this be why even harmless panhandlers get so much bad rap? The same behaviors they engage in can also be a precursor to crime by someone so inclined... To keep the hyperlocal taggers from this thread, I am specifically connecting this with panhandling and vagrancy downtown. What do you think? What would it take to separate the harmless beggars and homeless from the potential criminal? How does one maintain safe practices while still showing empathy to those in need? Funny thing about panhandling, when I am visibly armed and someone approaches me for change I am more likely to give money as opposed to offering to buy coffee or a sandwich. Why? Because a criminal or addict is not likely to approach someone with a visible means of protection. In other words their need has overridden any fear or apprehension they may have of me.
