Eull Gibbons wrote three excellent books, Stalking the Wild Aspargus (which I once owned but do not anymore) Stalking the Healthful Herbs (Which I currently own) and Stalking the Blue-Eyed Scallop (Which I have not read)

These books are amazing reads and full of useful information and fun anecdotes.  Before I track them down online I wanted to see if anyone local had copies I could purchase.

I got my picture taken with Sparky the Firedog!
jusbysparkyatcarnival.jpg

I neglected to bring ANY MONEY so Orion could participate in the carnival activities!

I asked the nice lady, "You don't take plastic, do you?"

No, but she did hand me a dollar's worth of tickets!  So he played 4 games: put-put golf, mini-Basketball, Fishing with a clothespin over the Shower curtain, and baseball vs. the stacked wooden bottles.

When we'd used those up I wound up selling some of my Funny Money (Deception Dollars, 11-2 Stolen Election), for 5 tickets each to a couple of intermediate grade boys.

I'm starting a separate thread because a discussion about the actual proposed PBIA budget, I believe, is important. However, the title of Emmett's post is misleading and a mistake made by many.

I think that the City of Olympia should use RSS technology to push info that the City wants to provide, facilitating a convenient exchange of information by enabling digital outlets like OlyBlog, neighborhood associations, and feed subscribers, to access content in a timely and accessible manner.

The City of Olympia creates volumes of content, and re-posting information found in Adobe Acrobat files, emails, and embedded in web-pages, can consume alot of time.

Open-source technology is well developed in our community, and I encourage local practitioners to support an open-access model for information technology policy at the City of Olympia.

-any thoughts?

Almost every week this is the "What's on the city council's plate this week" review. I don't cover everything, so if you want the full rundown, read the packet and agenda yourself.

The city council will also consider the budget for the Parking and Business Improvement Area downtown. From the staff report:

Total PBIA Assessments available $174,324 (This includes a unspent balance from prior year appropriations totaling $62,474 and new 2008 assessments totaling $111,852). The Advisory Board is recommending continuing existing programs and services and new programs and services that total $163,500, leaving a balance of $10,824 for future programs.

Usually I stick with the things that interest me when I do a city council packet rundown. But, this time I picked something out that I thought would be more interesting to all of you guys: Art at the new city hall.

Not my cup of tea, but here we go.

One percent of capital projects in Olympia are usually held back for some sort of public art project. Not going to be any different in the new city hall down at the old Safeway store. From the staff report:
