On Monday night the roughly 30 people showed up at Olympia city hall at a public hearing held by the Olympia Planning Commission to testify on a proposed noise ordinance specifically tailored for downtown Olympia.

The move towards a quantified noise ordinance began in early February at the request of Councilman Kingsbury. Currently there are no guidelines for noise pollution and no laws that deal with noise complaints other than nuisance code found in the Olympia Municipal code 8.24.020(J) The emitting of loud and raucous noise, from whatever the source or location, in a manner which, under the circumstances, unreasonably disturbs others; The proposed ordinance is based on ordinances from a dozen cities medium and large cities in the Puget sound region and the Washington Administrative Code 173-60-040 and 173-60-050.

Ruth Snyder a downtown Code Enforcement Officer presented the proposed ordinance that would set 60 to 65 decibels, approximately the level of a conversation, as measured at a property line as the allowable noise level during the day. The level would be 5 to 10 dbs lower at night.

Guerrilla gardening from wikipedia

Guerrilla gardening is political gardening, a form of nonviolent direct action, primarily practiced by environmentalists. It is related to land rights, land reform, and permaculture. Activists take over ("squat") an abandoned piece of land which they do not own to grow crops or plants. Guerrilla gardeners believe in re-considering land ownership in order to reclaim land from perceived neglect or misuse and assign a new purpose to it.

Help build the Collective Autonomy Net!

Tyson and Kirsten are traveling on passenger trains across the country to discover, connect and facilitate networks of people, places and projects
that are developing alternative economic architecture for do-it-yourself liberation. Come meet others interested in Collective Autonomy!

We see thriving modes of existence that are impervious to the demands of empire.
We’re learning that when we don’t need capitalism anymore, it will disarm itself, much to the dismay of the wealthy elite who control governments,
media and the stock market.
We want to show that our movement is much stronger and richer than we are led to believe. We want to encourage this vital activity by making solidarity apparent and by deepening transcontinental mutual-aid.

Lets discuss what’s happening, how you are a part of it and what else we can do.

**

The Collective Autonomy Net (CAN) is a network that connects an intentionally decentralized movement. It exists simultaneously on the Internet and between real people and projects in our streets and gardens.
We use the term Collective Autonomy to refer to the myriad ways we can arrange counter-institutions: Food not Bombs, Really Really Free Markets,
Infoshops, Local Currencies, Guerilla Gardens, Free Skools, Bike Kitchens, Worker-owned Cooperatives…

The last infoshop mysteriously disappeared from in front of Cafe Vita at 4th and Franklin. In related news, the Industrial Worker newspaper box also disappeared from that corner. The new 24 hour anarchist infoshop continues providing anarchist reading material 24 hours a day for free to the local community. It's now located at 4th and Capital in front of US Bank.

All materials are free. Feel free to take, borrow and leave print information. Enjoy.

Bulliten posted by the Brotherhood's myspace page :: wtf?!?!?!

The City of Olympia Plannning Commission is holding a public meeting tonight prior to making a recommendation to the Olympia City Council on a proposed amendment to the Downtown Noise Ordinance. The proposal is to make illegal any noise above 60 db... between 10pm and 7am, from commercial to commercial and commercial to residential properties. According to ASHA (American Speech- Language-Hearing Assoc.) a normal conversation between two people measured at a distance of 3 feet is equal to approx. 60 db. Probably any venue that has bands and many that have djs would be considered in violation.

Your comments matter, come to the meeting!

Monday, April 7th
7:00pm, Olympia City Council Chambers, 900 Plum St. SE

One of the great non sequiturs of the left is that, if the free market doesn't work perfectly, then it doesn't work at all-- and the government should step in.

If this is truly a cooperative community experiment let's create something experimental and cooperative.  JPO gave a great post about what hyperlocal means to her.  Let's define hyperlocal in regards to what is acceptable content for OB.

Let's also discuss if a person tagging a post as innapropriate should be identified.  Personally I would consider that a form of intelectual honesty, and would also provide a safeguard to show if a certain individual is misusing power.

Once hyperlocal is established as firmly as possible it should be implimented.
