His mom bid on me at an auction last year. The certificate expiration was 5/08, so she called on Wednesday to book for Saturday. I brought up the idea of a pie, and she liked it.  She said she'd discuss it with the birthday boy as to whose face would get it.

As it turns out, he got it.  And she got it.  And two of his friends got it too.

mint

A while back, some folks helped me identify a cluster of geranium roberts plant that I had growing wild in a section of my back yard.

This time, I have what I believe to be a member of the mint family -- it's got a minty scent to it, and the previous owners of my house mentioned that it was a mint, but they didn't know what kind it was. I'm not sure if it's a common mint in this area, or if it's imported in, but I figure somebody here might be able to identify it.

Oly2012 presents its self a citizen's group offering moderate, well-reasoned suggestions for the future of Olympia when in fact nothing is further from the truth. Oy2012 is a tiny group non-downtown residents who are getting much more press than their recycled and discreditied fantasies deserve. I apologies for quoting the enterty of their missive but I think the document must be taken in whole.

Introduction

When OLY 2012 formed, the members of the steering committee pledged to conduct independent reviews of the issues impacting the revitalization of downtown Olympia.

Over the past several months the steering committee has met with and talked to dozens of individuals and groups interested in improving Olympia’s downtown. We have confirmed that the majority of our area’s residents (Magically accomplished without talking or polling the majority of residents) love downtown and most are passionate about wanting it to be even better. (Don’t presume for me. I want to make downtown it worse!) Our community places a high value on access to the waterfront, including substantial view corridors between Budd Inlet and Capitol Lake. There is a clear desire for a “walkable” downtown with continuous streets of small retail shops, trees and flowers, good lighting and signage, adequate parking, nightclubs, and sidewalk cafes. Creating downtown housing for all ages and income levels will significantly increase the downtown economy and reduce the need for automobiles to get us to where we work, shop, and dine out.

Student Power and the Sit-in at Evergreen

May 30th marked the 10th day of the sit-in of Evergreen State College administrator Art Costantino's hallway. Students are demanding the immediate reinstatement of Olympia SDS and have recently added the additional demands that Kelly Beckham, an SDSer be offered her job back as well as compensation for time lost, and a change in the process by which student groups lose their RSO (Registered Student Organization) status that is determined by those most affected, the students and members of > these organizations.

The banning of SDS as a student group is an indication of the current political climate at The Evergreen State College, one that has been increasingly suppressing student dissent, which includes the aiding of law enforcement agents in the arresting of students, the handing over of student records to law enforcement agencies, punishing students for their political beliefs and activities. This includes the firing of Kelly Beckham and the firing of students who were allegedly involved in the events of February 14th, but who have not been convicted or even charged as well as the selective enforcement of a "concert moratorium. The Evergreen State College is also on a path of becoming increasingly more mainstream which is pushing the college in a direction contrary to its original mission statement. The students sitting-in want to see an end to all of this.

Science Magazine printed an article about anthropogenic CO2 impact on the oceans in July 2004.  You can read the article here:  The Oceanic Sink for Anthropogenic CO2

Some folks, spokepersons for industries who stood to turn a quick profit through environmental destruction, have created lots of smoke to make it less than clear that anthropogenic global climate change is happening and needs to be addresses. The ethics of folks who would choose to draw their paycheck from being part of the smoke machine are in question.

Other folks, politically motivated, but unsophisticated thinkers, have done their part to prevent needed changes in public policy.  These unsophisticated thinkers are easily manipulated by wedge issues like abortion, gun rights, same-sex marriage etc. and then they can be counted on to mindlessly parrot the industry storyline and make it more difficult for the electorate to understand the situation we face.  We see an endless run of red herrings:  the ice caps on Mars are melting, environmentalists and their catalytic converters caused global warming, on and on.  Some of these smokescreens are more laughable than others, but the impact is not laughable.

On May 22 2008, the NOAA published an updated article on the acidification problem.  You can read that article here: International Scientists Find ‘Acidified’ Water on the Continental Shelf from Canada to Mexico

from that article:

“Acidification of the Earth’s ocean water could have far-reaching impacts on the health of our near-shore environment, and on the sustainability of ecosystems that support human populations through nourishment and jobs,” said Richard W. Spinrad

Here is a potential teaching moment from this article:
