Despite assuming he wouldn't go, Jim Anderson has the goods on the Spaghetti Bowl:

This one was tougher to stomach than the last: by a 7-0 score, Olympia edged out a gutsy Capital crew, taking yet another bite from the Spaghetti Bowl.

The wife and I arrived late, missing the entire first quarter. We didn't miss any major action--I'm guessing--since it took over two minutes into the second quarter until the Bears crossed the goal line for the first and only time.

...

In the end, Oly's size and speed advantages were just enough. In his second year as Capital's coach, John Johnson has nearly turned the tables on our crosstown rivals. Next year's matchup may finally be the one that puts the Cougars back on top.

Goodwill will hold a grand opening Sept. 18 of a new South Lacey Store, featuring a Junior Fashions Department, expanded Book Department and a large inventory of gently used clothes and household items.

Read more about the store and the event at http://www.theolympian.com/business/story/582600.html. Sharon Kelly, a Lacey resident, will be the store manager.

The story emphasizes not only the expanded business nonprofits are receiving in these economic times but also the need for donations. For more information on donations, see www.tacomagoodwill.org.

People should know where there donations are going and local nonprofits help local residents. At Goodwill, for example, they support job-training and placement services. In fact, more than 90 cents of every dollar raised goes toward our mission to change lives by helping people with disabilities and disadvantages go to work. Many for-profit companies seeking donations make sales that mostly go toward the bottom line.

Sure, I'm just the PR guy, but it's worth keeping all this in mind.

Almost every week this is the "What's on the city council's plate this week" review. I don't cover everything, so if you want the full rundown, read the packet and agenda yourself.

The only interesting thing out of the very thin council packet before the big show public hearing next week was this little nugget:

We would be willing to entire into a developer agreement proposed by City Staff ... The proposed developer agreement would be used to ensure that the additional height that we are requesting will, in fact, produce a mixed-use project that will not only accommodate street level retail, offices and parking, but also provide the highly desirable housing element on the floors above.

That came from a response to an Environmental Impact Statement from one of Triway's outside consultants. Full letter here.

What is sounds like to me is that Triway is willing to let the city dictate exactly what they want the project to look like, in exchange for the rezone.

I have been thinking about the concept of perpetual war. What are some of the consequences of the perpetual war economy? George Orwell's classic novel, 1984, speaks directly to that question. I urge you to read it, or to remember it if you have already...

1984

The following is something that I wrote up a while ago, after seeing the Actor's Gang performance of "1984" at the Washington Center for Performing Arts:

An adaptation of Orwell's 1984 for stage, it was a great performance.

I received this email today. It's from the School of Americas Watch organization:

Dear Robert ,

We are writing with grave concern about an emerging conflict in South America´s poorest nation, Bolivia and we need you to take immediate action. Bolivia is facing a critical moment in which the survival of a new era of hope is gravely threatened. After suffering decades of military dictatorships followed by years of economic dictatorship, Bolivia heralded in a new moment of dignity with the election of its first indigenous president, Evo Morales. However, just one month after a recall referendum gave Morales 67% of the vote, Bolivia's secessionist movement has unleashed unprecedented violence throughout the country. After three days of riots, 8 people have died, several government institutions have been destroyed and Bolivia´s gas pipeline has suffered millions of dollars in damage. OAS Secretary General José Miguel Insulza has called for the violent actions of opposition groups to end.

Citing involvement with the opposition movement, Bolivia´s president Morales declared US Ambassador to Bolivia, Phillip Goldberg, persona non grata and asked him to leave the country. Among Ambassador Goldberg´s closest friends are Croatian businessmen in the city of Santa Cruz who lead the city´s powerful separatist movement. Washington responded by asking Bolivia´s ambassador to return to his country.

Do views of the Capitol Campus belong to the public? Is it appropriate for views of the Capitol Campus of State Government to be privatized? Can a denial of the proposed rezone be understood as acting in the public interest? - I think you know where I stand. - bert

 WPDP

Need to be State Resident, No Fees

WPDP is a prescription drug discount program created by the legislature at the request of Governor Gregoire. It is open to anyone with a Washington State address. There are no other eligibility requirements or fees. Although it is not an insurance program, with the WPDP card, you can receive discount prices on drugs that are very similar to what the large health insurance companies must actually pay. On average you’ll save up to 60% on generic drugs and 20% on brand name drugs. Find out more on the WPDP site or their FAQs page.

Organizations can request postage-paid, self-addressed enrollment mailers in Spanish, Korean, Vietnamese and Russian (100 or more copies) for distribution.

Individuals can enroll online (English) or registrese en el internet (Spanish).

I don't have much more info than that so, if you have specific questions, you can contact the WPDP program.

OLY 2012's Final Position Paper Endorsing the Urban Waterfront Rezone
September 2008

Introduction

OLY2012 is a group of independent citizens who care about downtown Olympia and hope to see it evolve in the best way possible for the community as a whole.  Just as the community has been divided by the proposed Urban Waterfront Rezone, the OLY 2012 steering committee was torn on this issue initially. Back in March, our first straw vote on the issue amongst our initial six-person steering committee was split, 3-3.

True to our mission of building broad-based community support, in early June we published what we hoped would be a "compromise" proposal for addressing the isthmus issue in our first position paper: Today's Vision for Downtown Olympia.  The proposal called for opening views and park space through the center of the isthmus by purchasing and removing the Capitol Center Building while approving a modified rezone to enable the building of mid-rise, mixed-use structures on the western edge of the isthmus.  Our hope was that our compromise proposal would unite the community, just as it united our initially-divided steering committee.
