It has come to my attention that OlyBlog is now copying entire articles from EverydayOlympia.com and OlympiaStandard.com for use on OlyBlog (here). I would like to know if this is considered acceptable behavior by the OlyBlog community or if this is the action of one person.
While I understand the value of cross promoting community websites I struggle to see how hosting entire articles on OlyBlog benefits these other local sources. As I respect my fellow community members I would like your input. Is this acceptable behavior for OlyBlog? Should I as an independent author feel a greater need to more zealously protect the work I put so much time and effort into?
OlyBlog is in a unique position in the Olympia community. It reaches out to over 2,000 Olympians every day as an information source and potentially serves to empower true grassroots community efforts. How is this empowering? How do my fellow community members propose I respond to this sort of behavior and what sort of precedent does this set?
Please respond to me off of OlyBlog: dreamsjung(at)yahoo(dot)com.

This is a teaser calendar: today and tomorrow. For the month of July.
For a closer view of any given poster, left Mouse-click the poster. Sometimes there are mouseovers, so if you're into that sort of thing just kind of sloooowleeee move your mouse pointer over the pictures. If you're interested in movie or Theater times their posters are (usually) hyperlinked to their respective schedules.
If your event is not on here I apologize. I do not always see every flyer and sometimes the pictures fuzz up and are illegible. I look preferentially upon flyer distribution at places which are not your store. I encourage mingling, or hiring a distro team. Hiring local artists to design eye catching posters and flyers is good.
If you find yourself inclined to bliss poetic about some just seen show please feel free to leave a comment (or have discussions) on that show's date. History is nothing without its people.
So I've given the City grief over targeting the Free Wall dumpsters but the source of my criticism is my love for downtown Olympia and in that light major props to our City and maintenance crews for the stellar clean-up job after a Saturday night of Lakefair. As I walked through downtown early yesterday evening it was pretty easy to spot the trash that people were carelessly leaving behind and tossing into street side gutters so when I set out on my early a.m. Sunday walk I was expecting to find a trashed downtown.
Downtown Olympia looks amazing this morning. Not a single trash can was overflowing and I saw garbage in neither streets nor alleys. Major kudos to the hardworking employees of Olympia and to all of the concerned people who voluntarily chipped in as well.
How well do you know Olympia? Here's the game: Each Saturday I post a picture from somewhere around Olympia and people try to figure out its location. The first person who gets it correct gets a Creative Commons Winner photo. If that doesn't get you excited then go start your own blog.
About an hour ago while passing through the artesian well parking lot I saw a band setting up for a free outdoor show. They said they were going to start in about 45 minutes and play for however long they could.

Sometimes you just have to look fortuity in the eye and call it dumb luck. As many of you have no doubt noticed I've been taking pictures of flyers and compiling them into a calendar (e.g. July) for both historical documentation as well as for promoting Olympia and Olympians. It turns out that Microsoft's search engine likes this calendar and returns it as a first page search result for "July 2008 calendar" searches. This generates a fair amount of random traffic to OlyBlog and represents a sweet opportunity to promote local artists.
I am now taking submissions for the August and September 2008 variants. All works will be fully attributed and I will provide a hyperlink to your website so that people can find you. Placing the name of the month in a legible manner somewhere upon your graphic is my only real requirement. I reserve the right to resize the image as is necessary for functional purposes.
Please send me a link to your submission through OlyBlog private message or e-mail me (dreamsjung(at)yahoo(dot)com).
