Pride Parade in Downtown Olympia 2011

It was the 20th anniversary of the LGBT pride parade in downtown last weekend and it was a great turnout at Sylvester Park!

There were plenty of fun dressed people and people showing their true colors. It was one of the biggest and best prides yet and it shows how far we've come as a community. Not just in the LGBT sense but how everyone perceives everyone.

Even our president, Obama, signed a proclamation in 2009 supporting the movement and commented on how far the community has come and how far we still have to go.

Forty years ago, patrons and supporters of the Stonewall Inn in New York City resisted police harassment that had become all too common for members of the lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) community. Out of this resistance, the LGBT rights movement in America was born. During LGBT Pride Month, we commemorate the events of June 1969 and commit to achieving equal justice under law for LGBT Americans.

It's important to look at the past and remember what a lot of people went through to get us where we are today. It's also important to remember what these fun days and parades are really all about. It's not just about dressing up and listening to great music but about equality, justice, and health as Obama said,
