Build Your Own Insulating Window Inserts!

On March 14th .....We will be having our last Insulating Window Insert work parties for the winter season (at the Procession of the Species Studio). We are planning to continue with them in the late summer/fall (hopefully with sponsors that will subsidize the costs).

In these glorious spring filled days, the nights have the slight bite of winter, to remind us that there is always next year.

Who:
The Home EmPOWERment Project--- a neighborhood based, do it yourself weatherization program designed to empower people, build community, and reduce energy use though neighborhood weatherization work parties and do it your self trainings. The Home Empowerment Project is a collaboration between ION Ecobuilding & The NW Ecobuilding Guild with support for the City of Olympia's Neighborhood Programs.

What:   Learn a simple, easy-to-learn method of making interior insulating window inserts that can stop a significant portion of heat loss and save on heating costs (especially if a home has single paned or aluminum double paned windows). These double layered window inserts are transparent, fit snugly inside the window opening, are easily removable and can be made in custom sizes. They are built with local sustainably harvested wood from Wild Thyme Farm, shrink wrap and weatherstripping. This strategy was developed in Maine and can be viewed on a Maine news channel at http://www.wcsh6.com/news/local/story.aspx?storyid=99333.

The facilitators of the work parties will provide detailed demonstration, hands-on instruction and all tools and materials to create multiple sets of storm windows. There will also be a short presentation on the basics of reducing home heat loss.

When/Where:
10-4 on Mar 14th  @ the Earthbound Productions Studio (AKA Procession studio).

Cost to Register
-----Materials $1.50 per sq ft of window and a facilitation donation ($30 suggested) until we get funding.  A limited number can inquire about volunteering to help others build inserts for free.

For each workshop, we will take 7-8 registrations. Each registrant can bring an extra set of hands to build more window inserts (2 people can build an insert every 1-2 hrs). We will have a few extra hands.

We will send a window measurement form and other info to confirm registration.

5/5 stars!

This program, their workshops, and the resulting insulated window coverings are AWESOME!!! We are fortunate to live in a community that provides and supports endeavors like this. If you know someone with a cold house & leaky windows, please let them know about this great resource.
