Which do you like best, before or after?

i have to admit that I kind of like seeing the stained glass and the gargoyles that were hidden by the marquee. though this sudden change makes the remaining OFS sign look very shabby and kind of sad.

The second one for sure - no

The second one for sure - no question.  Take the awning, too.

if i was to dream, i think

if i was to dream, i think that the awning could be reinforced and made into a balcony! great place for watching Procession of the Species and other street goings on.

With a little bit more work

With a little bit more work to restore the old facade the Capital Theater could be a beacon of hope for some of the more rundown buildings in downtown. Definitely get rid of the awning there are more attractive ways of keeping the rain off.

That old marquee was a

That old marquee was a decent example of its time period, but it was a shame to cover up the original architecture. The façade now needs a good cleansing rehab and a stylistically appropriate awning, and while we're at it, some updated lighting would be a nice idea, too.

I Like It Without The Awning

personally! But it does give it more of a theater appearance with it!

Much better with the stained

Much better with the stained glass uncovered. Having the marquee up was like having hardwood flooring and covering it with deep pile shag carpeting.
»

Exactly!!

Who ever thought that was a good idea?

So true!  I actually had

So true!  I actually had that happen in a house we lived in a few years ago...we couldn't figure out why on earth someone would put carpet (ugly carpet that wasn't even put in properly so it was all loose and made little 'hills' in the middle of the room) over lovely hardwood floors.   It was really satisfying to pull it all out though and see the transformation!  I feel the same way looking at this building...

one possible reason

I learned this one from my grandfather: Hardwood floors represent poverty to some people. I think not-so-much these days, but carpet was something of a status symbol and creature comfort (bare feet in the winters).

Not that this has anything to do with the original thread...but...

wj told me she thinks it

wj told me she thinks it looks like a "coolish bank building" now.

I like it better now...

What happened

to the old marquee? Where did it go? Anyone in OlyBlogland know?
»

I saw it getting cut into little pieces

and tossed into a dumpster.

Aieeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee! O most

Aieeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!!

O most tragical!

A vital chunk of Olympia tossed away.

Big mistake.

It was necessary

yet unfortunate. There was no feasible way of removing it from the building intact, and finding a place to store it. Not only did it weigh several tons, but it was rusty and weak in many areas. It was likely that without the support of the building, upon removal it would have folded up and come apart. You may take some solace in knowing that the C-A-P-I-T-O-L letters have been preserved, as have the marquee letters.
»

Knowing That

The letters from the word 'Capitol' should be installed on the front of the building's far right side (on The Vault side) in a vertical fashion starting a few feet from the top working toward the ground.  The letters would be perpendicular to the building.  Lighting it up with various modulations would be cool as well.
»

"Preserved" as in...

...how?

»

In a jar...

full of fermaldehyde, of course! Obviously kidding here. There is the possibility of them being used elsewhere in or on the building, and until then they've been tucked away for safekeeping....
