C.B. Mann, Apothecary, Olympia, W.T.

Many years ago while plowing the field on our farm in western Thurston County, my Dad noticed something unusual in the rows of freshly upturned soil.

It was a little bottle, 3 inches long, nearly intact save for a chipped neck.

On the side it says in all caps: C.B. MANN, APOTHECARY, OLYMPIA, W.T.

Apparently, Mr. Mann had a drugstore (and feedstore) in the SE corner of 4th and Washington, where the Security Building is now. The "Olympia, W.T." dates this as earlier than Nov. 11, 1889, when Washington Territory became Washington State.

C.B. served as the Mayor of Olympia, 1894-1895.

As for the history of this bottle, one can only guess. The odds are whatever was in it is probably considered an illegal substance today.
