Check out what we've already gathered at Oly May Day: Justice for All [2008]. Anything further on this theme will eventually also be added in. Look through what has happened in past years in Oly May Day.

I encourage everyone to tell us their experiences, there is no deadline, and all civil discussions are welcome. Got photos, video, stories to tell? Please join in.

King 5 Jackass Cameraman

I have been a stringer for both local and national news agencies, covering everything from flooding to port protests. While filming at City Hall on May Day I was unexpectedly pushed forward from behind by King 5 Cameraman Laddy Kite. At first when confronted he denied pushing me, but then later once we were away from the large police presence, he admitted to pushing me. I also have video of Trisha Manning Smith and an intern laughing about the incident. They stopped laughing when I told them I would be calling King 5.

The next day I did call King 5, and talked to Patti Cummings in human resources. She talked to executive news director Mark Ginther, and I am awaiting a response from him. I am seeking an official apology on BELO (corporation that owns King 5) letterhead. I should mention I have video proof of all of this by the way. The video clearly shows King 5 staff pushing me, lying about pushing me in front of police, then later admitting to pushing me. In an attempt to be fair, I am awaiting a response from Mark Ginther before posting the video and/or pressing charges.

And corporate news media is accurate? WE ARE THE MEDIA.

We are the media

I look forward to seeing the video. Let us know what response you get.

Why did you choose to cover this event?

Did you get a press release from one of the sponsoring organizations? Or was it just because Olympia has a reputation for protests turning violent? We're wondering in another thread why so many television cameras happened to be on the scene at this event, and perhaps you could shed some light on this question. BTW, was Laddy Kite the guy wearing the shirt that said "Hawaii" on it?

To be honest this time I

To be honest this time I found out relatively late about the rally and did not arrive downtown until people were at City Hall. I heard about it as breaking news from corporate sources.

Kiro 7 had the most exclusive video of the port protests. Komo 4 made the biggest deal out the Evergreen uprising. And this time, King 5 was on hand from start to finish. It's important to remember these three sources are in a daily competition with each other to get the best footage they can, so naturally they go where they think the best footage can be shot. King 5 bet on Olympia and they were right.

Olympia has become known to regional media as a hotbed of "anarchist insurgency," and that makes engaging news apparently. That being said it is very calculated on the part of the news media when to show what. You don't see them covering the much more frequent peaceful protests.

Here is a still from the video of Mr. Laddy Kite.

Two Weekly Peace Vigils

Two weekly peace vigils receive little to no attention from network media.

It's apparent that they're not interested in promoting the agenda of the Peace and Justice Movement.

I would love to learn more about your work, benny. Do you have any of your videos posted anywhere?

Thanks for the insights, benny

Hey what king of camera rig do you use? That still looks mighty clean.

Thank You

Sarah, thank you for organizing this into book format!

"Or was it just because

"Or was it just because Olympia has a reputation for protests turning violent?" I think this is one of the main reasons why there were so many cameras downtown for this event. It was obvious (at least to me) from the outset that there was going to be trouble.
