Just a few thoughts about this:

1. I know Debra Vinsel, Joe Hyer and Jeff Kingsbury (Kingsbury less so), but I was embarrassed by this video. It smacks of propaganda and boosterism. At certain points it was trying to be cute, but I was turned off by the "lets mention one more good thing" about downtown feel to it.

2. It would have been better to spend a few hours just talking to people about downtown, unscripted. Even if this video wasn't scripted, it sure felt like it. The blooper reel at the end reminded me that they had practiced their lines.

3. I know I harp about this alot, but the benefit of blogging and engaging in comment threads is that you avoid this kind of shmaltzy-staged stuff. Just talking on a blog (not this blog probably) in a direct way is more meaningful that this video.

How much did the taxpayers spent on THAT?

I'm really annoyed by the way the City Council is spending money... it's all about making downtown more appealing to shoppers.
»

I'm not sure

It might be a TCTV expense, which in that case its part of your cable bill. If you have cable, which I don't, so I didn't pay anything for it.
»

I don't even have a TV.

I don't even have a TV. Regardless of who paid for it, though, it's freaking me out that there no longer seems to be any REAL distinction between the City Council and the Olympia Downtown Association.
»

well

This IS really bad, really bad. I felt uncomfortable watching it, it was so bad.

It seems like they're trying to convince people who don't come downtown to come downtown. They don't really show much confidence, it's just not convincing.

If city money paid for this, is it a conflict of interest for Kingsbury to get to plug the business he owns?

Why the focus on performing arts as opposed to arts as a whole?

I agree with everything Emmett said as well.

Forbes

"...they've cited specifically our vibrant and lively arts community in our downtown as one of the key factors for why people want to site their businesses (here)."

And the City Council voted to outsource the mural work for the new City Hall. I'm not sure why there's such a chasm of disconnect here, but if our city wants to continue to organically build upon this then we need to invest in our artists. Or we can continue to have artists fighting it out to make a living all the while being forced out of downtown by the continuous rise of the cost of living downtown. Creating incentives for Artist Cooperatives and Live-Work spaces to be developed downtown would go a long way to keeping that "vibrant and lively arts community" as opposed to watching it leave when it can no longer afford the rent. Incentives for spaces that cater to the arts (like a free-to-use public outdoor performance space in Sylvester Park) would also help.

Here's a rumor: an artist active at the Free Wall was recently asked by a local business to make an alleyway mural based on his work at the Wall. Once again, kudos to OFS for having the foresight and fortitude to maintain despite City pressures to shut it down. Invest in the development of our artists and they'll help develop our city in unique and amazing ways. As Councilor Hyer says, "excellent, excellent.&#quot;

As far as the propaganda of this video: of course that's what it is. I guess I don't see the problem with that. Some people need to be convinced before acting and there's a lot of convincing that needs to be done to change the misperceptions about downtown Oly. At the same time I agree with Emmett, a forum for actually discoursing (like a blog) would be better.

Would you run for City Council, enpen?

I would doorbell tirelessly for you. You would be an awesome policy maker.

I can't even imagine that

I envision a smear campaign of incredibly successful proportions that targets my interest in street arts and my less than two year Oly residency.

Personally, I want Meta to run for a council seat again. And I think a real grass roots organization should probably start forming as a counter weight to Oly 2012.

Yes

Meta for Council!  :-)  I'll even wear a Meta for Council sticker on my holster :-p

Hmm, is that a positive, or a negative? ;)

All depends on if she endorses it or not :-)

it is called "fronting", and it is a dis...

...I have been in this scene since I was a little kid, and then more so as a college student from '89-'96, and now as a resident (GO Eastside Neighborhood! =)...

...I have always thought that the City of Oly Muni Gov "fronts" on the creative folks in town, without really doing anything to support the scene.

couple of reactions

And the City Council voted to outsource the mural work for the new City Hall.

From my understanding of this particular vote, the city council decided to put together a search group to find an artist for a large instillation piece for city hall. The search group would look nationwide, mostly because "large instillation piece" means something like a sclupture that needs to be installed. Again, that's my layman's understanding of the art term. That kind of person is fairly rare (needs to be able to work with the architect and builder) and may not be found locally.

On the other stuff, like paintings and murals, the city would most likely go with local yocals.

Here's a rumor: an artist active at the Free Wall was recently asked by a local business to make an alleyway mural based on his work at the Wall.

Heard the same thing, and I hope he follows through on it. If he does, I can't wait to see what he comes up with and I'll be down there every day bugging him as he paints it. Both the artist and the business are favorites of mine.

I'm guilty of being reactionary

I overstated. The job hasn't been outsourced yet, it's that the applicant pool has been opened to a broader market. Oly artists can and should still apply for this project and I think the Oly citizenry should heavily encourage the keep-it-local theme. As well, I believe it is now narrowed down to a Washington search instead of a national one, which is better.

As far as the rationale of needing a specific skill set, skills are developed.

Lame...

the video and the Forbes thing. The Forbes ranking has little or nothng to do with the downtown core of Olympia. The Forbes ranking actually reflects the attributes of Thurston County, NOT downtown Olympia. Our "arts" scene is ranked 61st out of the 180+ cities ranked and the arts scene is really defined as an index based on "museums, theaters, golf courses, sports teams and other activities." Nope. Thurston County scored well because of its average Educational Attainment, Income Growth, Job Growth, and Net Migration.

just my humble opinion but...

Yes. Quite right! You win today's best analogy award.

To be fair, that particular Forbes rating category is called "Arts and Leisure." Hence, golf. Still, to characterize the results as Forbes citing our "vibrant and lively arts community in our downtown as one of the key factors for why people want to site their businesses (here)" is a gross misinterpretation.  One could as easily say we rank high in spite of our somewhat mediocre rating in the "Arts and Leisure" category.

I like Rick's idea

I've been trying to have my camera on me more often as I travel, but I think someone taking video would be great. I am under no illusion that I would video the exact same things that other bloggers might, but it would still be fun and interesting. This video really didn't seem to catch either one imo. It seemed really sterile.
»

Yeah. Let's make a video.

I might be able to actually help.

they completely...

ignored the Capitol Theater. If both the State Theater and The Washington Center closed down I wouldn't be as displeased as I would if the Capitol Theater shut down. They talked a lot about Arts Walk, what about the Olympia Film Festival! When I think of Olympia I consider that theater a staple to the arts community here, and I couldn't image a Olympia without it, in fact I might not want to live in an Olympia with out it. I like the idea of a different video, I don't think that close to describing the Olympia that I choose to live in, they miss many of things that I appreciate about Olympia.

I have a camera and editing software.

Let's meet up and talk production.
