From Talking Points Memo: "As we have mentioned, the Washington State GOP stopped counting caucus returns last night after only 87% of the caucuses were counted and declared John McCain the winner, even though his lead over Mike Huckabee was a mere 1.8%. Nice to know the Repubs have progressed from 2000 where they refused to count Democratic votes, to 2008 where they are now refusing to count their own votes."

From the Seattle Times: Huckabee sends lawyers.

What makes it even more

What makes it even more amazing is that it isn't true. A winner was declared but the votes were all counted, and guess what...John McCain was still the winner.

How do you know it's not true?

Serious question, not setting you up.

Let's Actually Check it Out, Shall We

Here is the info on the Republican Caucus results. http://wsrp.org/News/Read.aspx?ID=7042 Notice that the time of posting and percentage of precincts are both OPENLY stated. For comparison, the state Democrat website is, as of this time, showing 95.9% of their precincts reporting.

All should realize that for both parties, the compilation and communication of caucus results are not being done not by the state elections machine but rather by a lot of average Joe and Jane Citizens.

Check out http://wsrp.org/News/Read.aspx?ID=7043 Notice the final sentence of “A final report is not expected to be available until Monday, February 11.” Again, OPENLY stated.

It was reported last night

It was reported last night that McCain was the winner with 87% reporting. The counting continued after that, it wasn't like they stopped. The media declared the race in the state over, not the party. Broadcast news may have jumped the gun a bit, that was the only problem.

When you read the article it

When you read the article it sounds as if there is an effort to mislead. Once a winner is declared and the party has a good feel for things a lot of people are sent home and counting slows, it wasnt as if votes were never going to be counted. The only reason I know this is I was at one of the sites last night and people were literally saying "They'll have a good time with this, why do they declare these things over so quickly?" Which is a good question, the party chairman should have just kept his mouth shut.

http://www.horsesass.org/index.php "Since prematurely calling Washington’s caucus for John McCain, thus changing the narrative of Saturday’s results, WSRP Chair Luke Esser is making a name for himself nationwide… or rather, the nation is making up new names for him. Over on TPM, Josh Marshall has taken to calling him “Boss Esser“ in their expanding coverage of the caucus counting debacle, while BradBlog has endearingly termed him “Esser the Suppressor“. Cute, but to us here at HA, we’ll always lovingly know Esser simply as Rob McKenna’s bitch. As anyone who has followed his storybook career knows, Esser has benefited from a long and cozy relationship with WA State Attorney General Rob McKenna, the two having worked closely together to climb the political ladder. Esser joined then King County Councilmember McKenna’s staff in 1996, and stayed on as a top aide even after Esser was elected first to the state house and then the state senate. Esser was paid for his help on McKenna’s successful 2004 campaign for Attorney General, and was rewarded with a plum assignment as “Outreach Director”, the perfect position in the AG’s office for a lawyer with very little legal experience. Then, after Esser lost his senate reelection bid in 2006, McKenna used his pull as the highest elected Republican in the state to help oust then WSRP Chair Diane Tebelius and replace her with his pal Esser, who proceeded to do political work on the public’s dime, while initially drawing pay checks from both the AGO and the state party. On resigning from the AG’s office under public pressure, Esser took pains to detail his close affection and ties to McKenna, writing in his resignation letter: “… Rest assured that I will always be available if I can ever be helpful to you.” Well… considering Attorney General Rob McKenna is also Sen. John McCain’s Washington state campaign chair, it looks like Esser was awfully damn helpful to his patron Saturday night. I’m just sayin’."
