For over 10 years, Oregon has allowed terminally ill patients with less than 6 months to live to legally end their own lives humanely. Isn't it time that Washington also gave our residents the same option? There are numerous safeguards to make sure that the patient is mentally and physically able to make this choice for themselves.

If you want to support this initiative, please sign the petition to get it on this Fall's ballot. You'll see signature gatherers around town carrying bright yellow and black signs for "Death with Dignity". Please drop by and plant your John Hancock on one of these forms. Or, if you prefer, private message me and we can meet up to give you the opportunity to be part of history.

There are only 3 weeks left to gather signatures. So don't wait, sign now!

More info about the initiative.

Hope this initiative is successful

Me too!

I hope you've signed it. If not, and you're a registered WA voter, please stop by OFS tonight between 5:30-8:00 and I'll have a petition with me in the lobby.

Why?

Care to explain that one? I think on a basic level this is one thing that the government should stay out of, and on a detailed level I think that "pulling the plug" is already an easy option here. I watched my dad die of cancer...there was nothing pain pills could help with in the last days as his body rotted alive from inside out...he was a man who fought till his last breath....and I don't think in his clear mind that he would have had that any other way. Lets not make it easy to mess that up. That's just my viewpoint....I am curious why others support this.

I have extraordinarily mixed personal fellings about the measure

I won't support it for personal reasons but won't oppose it for philosophical reasons. I'll just stand out of the way on this one.

"My Life Is Worth Living"

I have seen disabled people demonstrating against this, carrying signs that read "My Life Is Worth Living," and other similar messages. I don't think the intent of this initiative is to allow euthanasia for the disabled, but perhaps my perspective would be different if I were sitting in a wheelchair. I would really like to know more about their position on the right to die initiative.
»

To answer your question - Yes, their life IS worth living!

The main opposition comes from religious organizations that oppose the taking of one's own life under any circumstances.

However, there is a group called "Not Dead Yet" that consists of disabled persons. It's my understanding that they fear that this is the first step on a slippery slope leading to euthanasia (where a person is killed without their consent). I tried to find a summary of their views, but was unable.

I want to stress that being in a wheelchair is NOT a terminal illness and has nothing to do with this initiative. A person must be diagnosed by two doctors as being terminally ill with less than 6 months to live to be given the option of requesting the life-ending medication.

Thanks for that clarification

My Daughter Begged Us

not to let her die in pain or struggling to breath because of her Cystic Fibrosis (which will slowly suffocate her to death). She also said she'd like to be in control of her death, deciding when she'd had enough. She's 16. Pretty profound.

My houskeeper/friend is watching her father slowly die from Alzhiemers/Dementia. He doesn't remember to swallow foods or liquids, has dwindled down to around 100 lbs., doesn't know his children, and is wheelchair bound. He's gone blind and his kidneys are shutting down and he wears diapers. She was just here this past Monday crying in pain that he would not have wanted to go this way.  She said something else profound to me. "You can risk your life killing an unborn child as a young adult but you can't make the decision as a senior citizen to die with dignity".  She knows in her heart her father wouldn't want to live like this. He was a proud man who wouldn't want to put his children through this anguish.

It should be a persons choice to decide when enough is enough. In fact, I think it's selfish to continue to put your loved ones through the hell of pain & machinery because you can't let go of them.

I would definitely sign the petition and would do so if you tell me where I can before Tuesday. (We leave for Europe Tuesday morning).

Places to sign

I'll be at the Capitol Theater (206 5th Ave SE) on Sunday from 6:30-8:00pm, just walk inside and ask for the Lobby Supervisor.

Or just wander around Super Saturday, there'll be lots of people (including myself for awhile) gathering signatures.

I'm sorry to hear that your daughter has Cystic Fibrosis. One of my brother's best friends struggled against it until his mid 30s (long enough to get married and even have a kid!), which was unheard of for someone of his time, but much more common today. I wish your daughter a long and wonderful life!

I Love

hearing stories about CF Survivors! And ones who marry and have children! My daughter wants to be a mother so badly!

I won't be at Super Saturday, graduation parties all day tomorrow, UGH.  But I think I could ride my motorcycle down to the theater Sunday and sign if my husband doesn't mind me skipping out on Father's Day events! Oh heck, he already has his present, his radio controlled helicopter!  He won't care!  I'm sure he'll still be so wrapped up in learning to fly it better, like he has since Tuesday, he won't even know I'm missing for 30 minutes!

I look forward to meeting you

See you Sunday!

And feel free to bring your husband!

Missed you on Sunday

I didn't see you on Sunday, so I'm hoping that you ran into another signature gatherer. We really need those last few signatures to get it on the Fall ballot.

When Are The Signatures Submitted?

I'll be back July 3rd. Will I still be able to sign when I get back? 2 of our developmentally delayed church members home burnt down yesterday and we were helping them so I wasn't able to make it in to sign... I really want to. My housekeepers father passed away Friday morning and I want to do it in honor of him and in hopes that my daughter has a right to make the choice.

June 30th

Oh dear! I'm sorry to hear about the house, that's really tragic!

If I get the chance

I'll sign this.  The government has no reason to interfere with the consenting act of an adult.
