I enjoyed listening to Kim on Parallel University today. He interviewed Susan Lerner, from Common Cause, an organization that seeks to "hold power accountable." It was a good interview. I wish I could get an mp3 of it. If I do, I'll post it. Do you know where I could find one? [update: I also can't remember what the national legislative action item was - the information needed to give my Congressional Representatives. So if you heard it, and you know - well then - don't hold back. Shout it out!]

The second portion of the show was with Ralph Nader. Ralph Nader is so awesome. He was really instrumental in kindling my political awareness. I saw him in Minneapolis, MN at the "Target Center." I haven't been the same since. I suppose you could consider it an awakening. I was working, at the time, on a Voter Registration Drive for the Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now (ACORN). I registered a lot of people in traditionally economically depressed and low voter-turn-out areas, can't remember exactly how many, but it was right around 2,500 if I remember right.

Voter registration drives are great. It's good to inspire political awareness.

Anyway, it was a good program. Thanks to Kim and all the good folks at KAOS.

And I hope that I can find a mp3 from the show so that I can plug you in to the discussions. - bert

Recapture the Flag Petition

Susan was talking about this great petition: Recapture the Flag

It's basically against the current corruption and tyranny of the wedding of government and big business. It says: hold them accountable! Stop the heartless and cruel and mindless-pursuit-of-dominance-of international corporations - as they trample human rights, human dignity, and the health of the planet.

more from the site:

On January 21, 2009, the day after Inauguration Day, the next president of the United States will confront a host of critical issues created by our leaders under the guise of protecting America from terrorists: Iraq, Guantanamo Bay, citizen wiretapping, and U.S. torture policy -- to name only a few.

The Bush Administration has seized, consolidated and wielded executive power in ways unparalleled in modern American history. And the Congress has stood by, allowing these abuses to go on unchallenged.

The abuses of power include disregard for fundamental principles of American democracy -- separation of powers and our system of checks-and-balances; politicization of the justice system; grotesque acts of torture; disregard for international laws and institutions; and violations of fundamental civil rights and liberties at home and abroad.

President Bush will leave the White House in a few months, but these problems will remain. Now, and for the foreseeable future, we as a nation must fight to reclaim and preserve our fundamental values of liberty and justice, and ensure that the unprecedented power grabs of recent years don't set a dangerous precedent for the future. We must stop the erosion of our Constitution. We must recapture the flag.

Text of Petition

Here's the awesome text of the petition
It's been a tough few years for "we the people."

We've endured repeated abuses of power by the Executive Branch of our government. Time after time, we've watched Congress fail to stand up for what's right. We've seen the very symbols of our democracy tarnished, as our nation's reputation suffers at home and abroad because of these abuses.

It's time to demand better. Join with us by signing the Recapture the Flag Petition below:

We The People believe in the Constitution, the rule of law and justice for all. We pledge to Recapture the Flag by demanding a President and Congress that:

*Ends torture, respects human rights and restores America’s reputation in the world.

*Respects the rule of law and fiercely challenges anyone who seeks to undermine the Constitution and the Bill of Rights.

*Roots out corruption, special interest abuses and partisan prejudice in the administration of justice.

*Holds to account – without exception – anyone who breaks the law or violates the public trust.

*Protects personal freedom by rejecting warrantless spying and other affronts to individual liberty.

Wow, That is a great idea...

For 2003.

It's not 2003 anymore.

Why is it that truth is only putting on its pants when a lie is twice around the world?

Thanks Drew

But for me, this type of thing is important. It lends credibility to my other activism. If I didn't sign petitions and write letters to my Congressional Representatives and other public officials, then I wouldn't feel as justified in taking more confrontational actions - like protests at the Bangor Submarine base with the Ground Zero Center for Nonviolent Action, or Port Militarization Resistance.

This way, I give my representatives a chance to know my opinion, to understand my reasoning. They have the opportunity to represent me. If they don't, then I am disenfranchised and further resistance and confrontation is justified.

Bert Dog.
