I attended the City Counsel meeting this evening (at least the first half). I heard all the people talk, the usuals , the pro-troops, and the anti-war folks. Then I heard the Counsel response. I was very disappointed in everyone. The pro-troops people made themselves look as though they were saints and did nothing towards the anti-war protesters. They do clean up nicely I must say. They also gawked at the speakers and the Counsel Members, and one came close to being thrown out. I was disappointed in the anti-war protesters for another reason. That is because very few showed up. If this was such a huge issue to all of you why are you not there telling the city, your elected officials what you think? Lastly I was disappointed in some of the Counsel's responses, epically Counsel Member T.J. Johnson. He acted childish calling one pro-troops supporter out on the fact that he had ran and not been elected. This is not needed, it is inflammatory and divides us more. I am not with or against the actions of either side. However, I am very disappointed in all sides involved and hope that we can all come together at some point and discuss our differences and own up to our failures. But I am Just Another Voice

Submitted by The Original Yoda on Tue, 11/20/2007 - 10:53pm.I didn't see all of it but the "law and order" folk sure DO clean up nice. JeffB (from the Olympian comment threads) and anti-Watada/pro Israel "protester" spoke...he was very calm and nice.
One person representing OPMR (Sandy, I think) was very eloquent and persuasive (I thought).
A Miss Wynkoop (sorry if I totally got that wrong) offered a list of deplorable acts/statements commited by supposed, pro-troop supporters...to counter similar statements from other speakers whom I did not hear.
Several public commenters flung hateful barbs at TJ who, of course, responded with his own.
The mayor talked about his actions over the weekend in question and mentioned a letter sent to the Olympian, who did not print it. My city council things has an update from earlier.
The mayor also confirmed that the use of the city council chambers was copacetic.
Almost forgot...
Submitted by The Original Yoda on Tue, 11/20/2007 - 11:01pm.Someone off camera, who had previously spoken started disrupting and protesting the meeting and the mayor said, something like, 'you had your chance and now it's her turn to talk (Miss Wynkoop)..there is no protesting here. (I think it was JeffB but that's just a guess.)
Oh, and here's a link to the statement that the mayor wanted the Olympian to publish:

Thanks for the information

Submitted by Ehver Green on Wed, 11/21/2007 - 2:02am.She was awesome, too! I really appreciated her audio. TJ was too much for me to watch so I listenened to the rest of the council speak from the lobby with the firefighters. I agree, TJ was in
rareusual form. The language used by the last speaker was appauling. It was completely uncalled for and really not necessary. In other news, someone complained about TJ using city hall chambers for his forum last Monday past. I didn't think it was a big deal. The mayor and communications director, Cathie Butler, agree. Anyone can use the room as long as it is available and a city represetative or council memeber reserves the space and is present.
Outside of the port protests the other public comment topic was a transitional zoning plan for Olympia's westside east of Gloria Dei. Not sure of the details but it sounds like the city may have ignored previous public comment and is considering high-density housing in what is not yet historic. The popular argument against was to build the high-density housing downtown and keep with a plan of building a vibrant downtown. I really have no opinion because I just don't know enough about the subject.
Jim Reeves spoke about an imminent natural disaster for Washington state this winter because the state is named after George Washington and GW died in the winter of 1799. Somehow he tied the year 2007 to the year 1799 with the number 7. I couldn't understand all of it and may have missed an important detail.
Good attendance overall. Of the 20 or so public comments I'd say 5 were there to talk about westside zoning, 14 about the port (evenly split, of course), and one speaker giving kudos to the city for their sustainability efforts. He actually addressed the council in closing with, "You guys rock!"
It would be interesting if
