Well, its official. I am done posting on the Olympian online chat forums. I have no idea what was said and I only saw the aftermath of: Banned. (Personal jabs at other commenters are not acceptable.) - Aaron Mason, Online Production So, Emma gets banned today for allegedly taking personal jabs at other commenters. Let me restate that one more time becuase it deserves repeating. EMMA GETS BANNED FOR TAKING PERSONAL JABS AT OTHER POSTERS??????? Come on Aaron, you are kidding me right? Is this some sort of personal vendetta for you? Since WHEN is taking a jab at another poster a bannable offense? In just 3 minutes of looking through the comment sections in other articles, these are some of the other "offenses" that went unpunished by our friends on the right. "Now the question is who protects the military from your arrogant ignorance?" Given more time, I am sure I could come up with some doozies. I, personally, have been called some very colorful metaphors that somehow go unnocticed but when one of the left leaning persuasion dares come close to the line, its off to banned camp for them. WHAT GIVES?? |

I took them literally and clicked on the "report" link each time I saw something truly offensive. You see Aaron's response. A little intellectual honesty would go a long way at The Olympian.

Just because you send a comment report doesn't mean that the comment in question violates our posting guidelines. We make that decision. (I always run it past the other online employees before issuing a ban.)
I usually post a reason when I ban someone so that other users won't make the same mistake. (A lot of people comment without reading the posting guidelines, so they're not even aware of the rules.)
I'm not going to get into an argument with anyone over this. I keep emails, too, but I see no reason to try to call anyone out with them. I find it a bit childish and it usually comes back to bite you in ways that you'd never expect.

Submitted by Marcie on Fri, 08/31/2007 - 4:12pm.I'm generally not one to jump on the "banned"-wagon, as I have always felt that the power of the boycott is one to be used veerrryyy judiciously. If overused, it eventually loses it's effectiveness and people just stop paying attention. The most effective boycotts are ones that are well-thought out and are long-lasting. Having said that, I have just a couple of questions in my head that I'm sure someone out there can answer.
1. Why does the Olympian care? There's no financial loss if we (you) boycott the on-line paper. Would an advertiser pull their support because of this inappropriate behavior by the on-line editors? Probably not. So, it wouldn't effect the finances of the Olympian, which is their bottom line.
2. Will the boycott effect change? See above. If there is not financial hit, why would they change? They've already proven themselves to be inconsistent and irrational, how would a boycott change this?
3. Who knows, maybe the Olympian staff has a deep-seeded desire to provide an open community forum and a boycott would give them pause to reflect on their own behavior. could that be possible? (doubt it)
4. If a boycott doesn't effect change, then it's a boycott just to make the individual boycotter feel better, right?
Another Solution: Maybe we should all post MORE and make a point to put as much questionable material out there as possible. Let's make Aaron Mason really work for his pennies. That would not only be fun, but might be more effective at making the point that the lack of consistency, tranparency and fairness around the banning policies is intolerable.

We were acosted on a daily basis by the neo cons, called every name in the book, and they walk out unscathed. Larry and Emma have ONE SLIP and get banned? You Come On! How is THAT fair? Is it because we were not willing to go crying to Aaron every time someone called us a name? (which would have been like every 10 minutes, and who has time for that?).... You see, I think most of the people on those boards are so childish and incapable of forming an intelligent argument that they were just waiting for one of us to slip up so they could go whining to Aaron that they were offended and get another "lefty" banned, because we handed it to them every day, and this was their only recourse.

I am not 'boycotting' the online forums in an attempt to hurt the Daily O financially. I just want to make a point about how one-sided their ban-stick has been. Besides, i think it will be a very funny experiment to see if those people start to go after each other. My guess is that most people will get very bored pretty quickly and those comment boards will be a ghost town in a matter of weeks. eh, we will see.

It's already old news that The Olympian doesn't REALLY want people to report what offends them. The email that I copied and posted was proof enough of that. You see, there was the real point. Within less that a week, I found enough crap for 15 emails and some of them contained two and three copy/pastes of offensive material. Hell, I posted two examples of direct harassment that went on for several days.
That "report comments" crap from Aaron, today, was nothing short of patronizing us. I didn't just fall off the turnip truck here.
When I PROVED that he was full of crap, he then tried to intimidate me with his line about "things can come back at you in ways you never thought". At this point, there is nothing that would surprise me about The Olympian and retaliation. Actually, I'm prepared for the worst.

I watched the hatchet job done on Dan Kimball because his son was hired by the Civil Service Board. Totally off base and no apology, and in fact furthered the insult by saying it was a "bad decision for a father to make" to allow is son to be an officer - like HE had control over that.
On the other hand, we do have a couple of attorneys on the board who haven't been real happy with some public issues lately. I think our legal fees would be minimal, if any.

He made a lewd reference to my mother, but where was Aaron to protect her honor? What a putz! He'll jerk a woman from "the game", but he looks the other way when it's a testosterone fueled dipwad like scott who's misbehavin'. Another truly dee-lux poster recently left a nasty, vulgar post, like a pile of human excrement left in the middle of a trail so everybody has to walk around it, and I did report it. Absolutely nothing happened.
Emma's classy parting post reminds me of the expression, "like pearls before swine."
