Ecological Restoration Workparty at the Evergreen State College

English ivy is an invasive species that kills forest ecosystems, replacing them with ivy monocultures. All through the Northwest ivy threatens the health of forests, as well as the wildlife that dwells in them. Be a part of a growing, region-wide effort to combat the spread of ivy and join us for an afternoon of ecological restoration work on Wednesday, February 10th from 1-5pm at the Red Square bus loop at Evergreen.

We'll be manually removing ivy and replanting with native tree, shrub, and fern species. Bring clothes you don't mind getting dirty, and dress for the weather. We'll provide tools, gloves, snacks, water, and plenty of ivy to pull!

 Contact: nativeplantsalvage@gmail.com

To get to restoration site you can take the 41 or 48 bus to the Evergreen Red Square stop and we'll be right there! You can also bike (good way to get warmed up for some ivy-pulling) or drive. Parking is $2 at Evergreen, so carpooling is a good idea!

Getting it RIGHT in Carbon Exchanges
When: Wednesday, February 10
Place: Traditions Cafe 300 - 5th Avenue, Olympia
Time: 7:00 to 8:30pm

"Getting it RIGHT in Carbon Exchanges" with Peter Dorman. Peter teaches political economy at The Evergreen State College (TESC). He is a member of Economists for Equity and the Environment, a nationwide research and advocacy network; a consultant with Climate Change Economics, which advises state and local governments on climate policy; and has worked with The Sightline Institute in Seattle on analysis of the Western Climate Initiative. Discussion will follow.

I know Peter slightly, and that experience makes me think this will be a sophisticated and interesting talk - if you're interested in the economics and politics of cap and trade approaches to carbon reduction, that is!

Best,
Thad

The Evergreen State College and Evergreen Expressions are pleased to announce:

An evening of films and conversation with legendary Russian animation master, Yuri Norstein

In his animated films, Yuri Norstein employs characters and stories from Russian folklore and literature to eloquently depict the human condition. His works are poetic, transcending cultural and generational boundaries and yielding layered meanings and emotions. Norstein’s hand-made, cutout animation technique is also multi-layered. He deftly animates beautifully rendered characters and backgrounds on multiple planes of glass to create effects of three dimensional space and filtered and reflective light. Known as "the Pushkin of animation", Norstein's films have won countless awards at prestigious film festivals around the world and his critical acclaim in the international animation community equals that of Disney, Lasseter, and Miyazaki. At the 1984 Los Angeles Olympic Arts Festival, Norstein's Tale of Tales was voted the "Greatest Animated Film of All Time" by an international jury.

The screening will include a retrospective of Norstein’s films:

Tale of Tales
Hedgehog in the Fog
Heron and the Crane
as well as a preview of his feature film work in progress based on Gogol's "The Overcoat".

There's a YouTube of one of them at:

I think it is important to note that Congressmember Dennis Kucinich has written to Pres. Obama specifically asking to be included in the Feb 25 health care summit.  The letter is pasted in below.

Other Single-Payer, Medicare for All activists have petitioned the President to hear them as well.

Please call the White House and ask Pres. Obama to invite Rep. Kucinich to attend the summit.  And ask him to meet with Dr. Margaret Flowers, and other members of the Leadership Conference for Guaranteed Health Care, as well.

The Pizza Time strike 5 year anniversary is coming up Feb. 12.
Come out to remember workers struggling for better working conditions in
Olympia.

Meet Friday Feb. 12 at noon at 4th and Jefferson in downtown Olympia to
show support for local workers.

http://olympiaworkers.net

Check out Pizza Time Strike history at:

http://olympiaworkers.blogspot.com/2009/02/olympiaworkers-pizza-time-strike.html

On Feb. 12, 2005 all the Pizza Time workers in Olympia walked off the job
after presenting a list of demands to the new owner to improve working
conditions and reinstate two wrongly fired co-workers. When the owner
failed to meet these demands the workers created a daily protest at 4th
and Jefferson streets in downtown Olympia. With community support, Olympia Pizza Time closed down after eight days of picketing.

Start: 5:00 pm
End: 7:00 pm

And also on Saturday and Sunday, during the times shown on the bottom of the poster...

SAVE THE DATE!
The rave reviews just don't quit for Bainbridge Island's Jonathan Evison and his breakout debut novel All About Lulu. Don't miss the chance to come down to Orca Books and get to know him a little. Wrap your mind around All About Lulu , while you wrap your mitts around a local brew.

When: 6 p.m. Saturday, February 13, 2010

Where: Orca Books
509 E. 4th Ave
Olympia, Washington 98501

For more information, check out the February events at Orca Books: http://orcabooks.com/event

(from Publisher's Weekly):
Starred Review. Evison's debut—of love and loss, growing up, throwing up and moving on—is a stunner. William Miller Jr. is a scrawny loner whose mother dies of cancer when he is seven years old, leaving him an awkward vegetarian with an ominously macho father and idiot twin brothers in mid-1970s Santa Monica.

Evison provides readers a viciously funny and deeply felt portrayal of a blended family and one man's thwarted longing.

Are you retired and looking for another way to utilize your skills? Are you in between careers and searching for a different direction to take? Regardless of what stage you're at in life, if you want an opportunity to retool skills, obtain training, or explore new options, join us for the first class in the Next Chapter workshop series February, 20th from 9 a.m. to noon at the Olympia Center on 222 Columbia St. NW. Next Chapter, a new program of the Volunteer Center of Lewis, Mason and Thurston Counties in collaboration with Centerpoint Institute and NonProfit Solutions NW, supports experienced adults in seeking meaningful work, service, learning and self-discovery and in sharing their positive energy and wisdom to create a more vibrant community. The workshops are geared towards community members who want to explore options for the next stage of life, refine skills, obtain new training, use their skills in service opportunities, and make meaningful connections with their peers. Each is an interactive, hands-on experience with homework in between to deepen your experience. Come ready to work and be prepared to change your life. The first workshop in the series “Change,” will help participants learn a map to help navigate the transitions they’re facing and gain a fresh, new perspective on their next chapter of life. This workshop series can help guide you through the process of understanding where you’re at in life and give you the tools to discover where you want to be next. The class focuses on: • Developing more patience while moving through the transition process and looking at change in a more positive way. • Putting tired, stuck, burned out, or overwhelmed feelings into perspective • Defining effective next steps for working with the process, instead of against it. Each individual session is $35 or save, by signing up for all four sessions at $125.

We need you to call the President and ask him to attend the Sidewalk Summit on Thursday, Feb. 25th at 9 AM at the NE Corner of Lafayette Park.

Sidewalk Summit for Improved Medicare for All

Dear Single-Payer Supporter:

Since the beginning, the discussion on health reform has been flawed because of the exclusion of a single-payer system in the debate. With universal healthcare off the table, so goes a meaningful discussion on controlling costs and improving access to care.

On the same day President Obama convenes a "make-or-break" bipartisan summit on healthcare reform, patients, nurses, and doctors will meet in the streets of Washington DC and around the country to demand a real solution - improved Medicare-for-All. Join us for a Sidewalk Summit on Thursday, February 25th, at 9am at the NE Corner of Lafayette Park (H St and Vermont) in Washington DC or find one near you.

Since no single-payer supporters have been invited to the White House Summit on health care, we urge you to call the White House and invite President Obama to listen to a real solution to the health crisis at the Sidewalk Summit for Improved Medicare for All.

Call the White House at 202-456-1111 or 202-456-1414.   Click here to follow a sample script.

No matter what the Congress and President do, if anything, the time is now to lay the foundation for a real health care reform movement that cannot be ignored.

Join the WSU Extension Native plant Salvage Project on Sunday, February 28th for a volunteer workparty to salvage native plants in NE Olympia. We will meet at 9:30 a.m. at the site and proceed to salvage plants until around 12:30. Then we will eat lunch (free hot vegetarian (vegan!) soup) and move to our holding beds where we spend the afternoon putting the plants in pots. Volunteers may also choose to join the effort just for the afternoon hours—usually until around 3:30 p.m.

This is a great opportunity to familiarize yourself with native plants of our region and get involved in the effort to protect and restore the South Sound. The plants are cared for and later provided to community groups who use them to restore habitat and improve water quality. Plants are also used to support NPSP-sponsored projects such as learning landscapes, demonstration gardens and habitat restoration projects in and around Thurston County.

Tools, gloves, snacks, hot drinks, and lunch provided! To attend, please send an email to nativeplantsalvage@gmail.com , or call 360-867-2166 and we will send you details and directions. Visit our website, nativeplantsalvage.org to read more about us and our upcoming events.

In the 1950's, economists triumphantly announced that America was “classless” – we were all middle class. Now we see a widening gap between the “haves” and the “have-nots.” Consider how our institutions work to reinforce the divide (even our system of money creation!), and whether a more just system is possible. Includes clips from “America: Freedom to Fascism”; “Zeitgeist” Parts I and II; “Capitalism: A Love Story”; “Money As Debt” Parts I and II. MIXX96 Meeting Room, corner of State & Washington, Olympia. This is Event Number 3 of the GREEN ECONOMICS Series, presented by the Green Party of South Puget Sound.

He was later cleared of all criminal charges. Since resigning from the U.S. Army in 2005 with an honorable discharge, he has detailed his experiences at Guantanamo and his struggle to prove his innocence in his book For God and Country: Faith and Patriotism Under Fire. In 2008, Yee was elected as a national delegate for Barack Obama to the Democratic National Convention.

The Religion and Wartime forum will also include a panel discussion by clergy from local faith communities. Rational Benevolence Collaboratory, 10th Meeting (De Colores Books after hours)

Join the Rational Benevolence Collaboratory and help end suffering, help create joy.

7:00pm to 8:30pm, or so.

The Rational Benevolence Collaboratory is an intellectual experiment in which researchers collaborate to deeply re-think our solutions to the problems of widespread suffering and scarce joy.

Researchers try to suspend all ideological biases and approach these problems from a position of neutral objectivity. (They put their sacred cows out to pasture and start from scratch.) To achieve this neutral objectivity, researchers use various methods of radical premise-checking (such as the Socratic Method). Bring your minds & hearts, and maybe a notebook or laptop.

Collaborations happen on the FIRST and THIRD Thursdays of each month, 7:00pm to 8:00 or 9:00pm, at the De Colores Book Store downtown Olympia.

507 Washington Street Southeast Olympia, Washington 98501

Come join WSU Native Plant Salvage Project on Friday, March 5th from 1-5pm at the Garfield Nature Trail for an afternoon of restoration work. Please contact us to attend: nativeplantsalvage@gmail.com or 360-867-2166

For the past few years we have been working to remove the invasive species english ivy from the trail and replanting with native species as part of a 20+ year neighborhood effort to restore the ecology of the park. On friday we will be placing cedar logs (Donated by the City of Olympia) along the steep slopes to stabilize the hillsides as well as freeing trees of ivy using a technique called "life rings" where the vertically-growing ivy is removed from the tree and the surrounding ivy is pulled back and away in a ring around the tree. Bring clothes you don't mind getting dirty, and dress for the weather. We'll provide tools, gloves, snacks, water, and plenty of ivy to pull!

This is part of our preperation work for our Arbor day Event, which will be a celebration and tree planting at the Garfield Nature Trail on March 27th. (For directions and other details, click on "read more" below)

Community Discussion of
The Economic Woes of Ordinary Americans

Olympia Center, Room 200 (new location)
Saturday, March 6, from 2 to 5 PM

In the 1950's, economists announced that America was “classless” – we were all middle class. Now we see a widening gap between the “haves” and the “have-nots.” Many Americans are hurting, and wondering what happened.

Let's talk about what happened. How do our institutions work to reinforce the divide? Is the problem just the fraying of the safety net, or is it deeper -- with corporate structure, or the Fed, or even with our system of money creation? And is a more just system possible?

Go to the Green Party website, greenparty-sps.net, to check out many provocative background articles giving clues to where the problem might lie.

Then come to a stimulating community discussion, from 2 to 5 PM on Saturday, at the Olympia Center, Room 200. (Free, but contributions will be accepted to defray the cost of the room.)

This is Event #4 in the series A Green Economy, presented to the public by the Green Party of South Puget Sound.

Slightly edited from their website...

On the weekends surrounding the composer’s 100th birthday, The Esoterics ["Seattle's most innovative choir"] is doing a concert series of Samuel Barber’s entire choral oeuvre. With repertoire ranging over four decades, from his early part-songs setting American poetry, to his rarely-heard Motetto (written at age 20!), and the sublime choral rendering of his Adagio for strings (entitled Agnus Dei), Barber’s choral music is timelessly profound and offers something for everyone. Adding yet another strand of depth and appreciation, members of The Esoterics will read anecdotes and excerpts of letters from the composer’s biography between the pieces in this concert.

One of these concerts is at St. John's in Olympia - this Sunday, March 7th, at 3:00PM. Although the website sells tickets (General Admission - $18; Student/Senior Admission - $15), the email I got about this said that the church had done a mailing announcing it as a free concert. I guess you take your chances; I assume that you can get a ticket at the door if it should turn out that you need one...

St. John's official address is 114 20th Avenue SE, but it's on Capitol Way a few blocks toward Tumwater from the Capitol Campus.

English ivy is an invasive species that kills forest ecosystems, replacing them with ivy monocultures. All through the Northwest ivy threatens the health of forests, as well as the wildlife that dwells in them. Be a part of a growing, region-wide effort to combat the spread of ivy and join us for an afternoon of ecological restoration work on Wednesday, march 10th from 1-5pm at the Red Square bus loop at Evergreen.

We'll be manually removing ivy and replanting with native tree, shrub, and fern species. Bring clothes you don't mind getting dirty, and dress for the weather. We'll provide tools, gloves, snacks, water, and plenty of ivy to pull! Contact: nativeplantsalvage@gmail.com , 867-2166

To get to restoration site you can take the 41 or 48 bus to the Evergreen Red Square stop and we'll be right there! You can also bike (good way to get warmed up for some ivy-pulling) or drive. Parking is $2 at Evergreen, so carpooling is a good idea!

This event is co-sponsered by the Evergreen Grounds Crew, WSU Native Plant Salvage, and the campus group ERC Environmental Rescource Center.

Start: 2:30 pm
End: 5:00 pm
We are gathering Wednesday afternoon to show our local Planned Parenthood and the people who work there just how much we appreciate what they do, and the way that they keep doing it despite the dangers attached and the presence of anti-choice protesters. Please feel free to come on by and show your support for Planned Parenthood and reproductive rights. Bring your own sign or borrow one of ours. This will be happening outside the Olympia Planned Parenthood at Legion and Adams. Hope to see you there.
Start: 7:15 pm

Join the author, Lyanda Lynn Haupt, for a reading and signing of “Crow Planet” at the Olympia Timberland Library. Copies of the book will be available for purchase.

“With her sensitivity, careful eye and gift for language, Haupt tells her tale beautifully, using crow study to get at a range of ever-deepening concerns about nature and our place within it, immersing us in a heady hybrid of science, history, how-to and memoir.” -Erika Schickel, Los Angeles Times.

The library is normally closed at this time and will be open only for the event.
