Drew Crooks\, Historian and Author

State Capital Museum

211 - 21st Ave. SW\, Olympia

(360) 753-2580

\\"Olympia's history is full of interesting stories. Historian Drew Crooks in this illustrated presentation will explore three strange tales of the Capital City. The first story concerns the remarkable rise and fall of the Swiss Chalet at Priest Point Park. This picturesque structure served for decades as a honored trademark before its decline and demolition. The second tale traces the unusual journey through space and time of a Native American house post. Its history vividly shows the changing patterns of prejudice in our community. The last story is the curious account of a pioneer song that became a modern advertising legend. Written by Olympia's Francis Henry in 1877\, 'The Old Settler' lyrics were set to a popular Irish tune entitled 'Rosin\, The Beau.' All three of the tales have lessons for us today.\\"

\\"Copies of Olympia\, Washington \: A People's History\, edited by Drew crooks\, will be available for signing. Published by the City of Olympia\, the well illustrated book contains 26 essays written by 25 historians on various aspects of Olympia's fascinating history.\\"

\\"This public program is part of the Fall Lecture Series at the State Capital Museum. Suggested donation to each presentation is $2. You are welcome to bring lunch. Coffee and tea will be served.\\"
