The letters to the editor section of The Cooper Point Journal can tell you a lot about the College. There are two letters from 1976 I think deserve special attention. Here's the first one, from Apr. 29:

"To the Editor:
BRRRAAAAKK BUK BUK BRRRAAAKKK!!!!!
Thank you,
Friends of the Coop."

The second letter was by faculty member Craig Carlson, Oct. 7. Why he wrote it isn't really important, since I think it can stand by itself without any explanation:

"To the Editor:
I never said 'Everything is everything.' What I said was, 'The only reality is the transition of one's ideas into rhythm and beautiful movements.'
Craig Carlson."

Carlson, who is unfortunately no longer with us, originally had a huge beard and long hair when he came to TESC. One day his students arrived in class and he didn't show up. As they waited, they started complaining and gossiping about Craig. It turned out he had been there the whole time. Craig had shaved his beard and cut his hair real short and no one recognized him.

Good to read mention of Craig

Good to read mention of Craig Carlson. Sometime in the mid 90s he was part of the teaching team for NW Native American Studies, I didn't study directly with him but I do remember him in group discussions. I remember this hair transformation story too, don't recall whether he told us or whether Dave Whitener did. I think maybe Dave did, he is a great storyteller.

Craig Carlson worked with some students who had gotten disorganized and floaty towards the end of the quarter, I remember Craig encouraging students to be mindful of what they want to do next in life, to fashion their studies to incorporate this, and to be aware of the basics like work and money. In other words, to get real.

My source for the hair story came from one of my roommates, who was there when it happened. I always appreciated Craig's playfulness, especially as the campus atmosphere grew more serious at the end of the 1970s.

He impressed me as someone with a poetic mind. If I was a painter, I'd paint him inhabiting a flow of words and images.

Sad that he is gone, the world can always use more poetry and play.
