I live on Capitol Way and drive on it daily. I don't understand why the city allows people to place lawn chairs DAY's in advance of the parade. This started Wednesday. People placing chairs right off the road to reserve spots for what a PARADE. Please we have parades in Olympia all the time. Sure this one may be a little different then all the others but it's still a parade. What happened to waking up and making your way to a spot the day of the parade? I think this is a huge eyesore for almost a week to have lawn chairs, ribbons and cones laid out for several blocks on one of our busiest streets. I think the city next year should say no more and anybody that does place chairs out they should drive a huge truck down the street and pick up the chairs like garbage. Or better yet I think I'm going to take my couch downstairs and place it on the street. It's not a pretty couch. Actually it's pretty ugly. I could even let out the hidabed and reserve more spots using that. No...not really. I just think this should end this year. What are your thoughts?

It's Tradition

It is tradition, every year

It is tradition, every year I look forward to seeing the chairs and ribbons. Each town has there things, this is one of ours. I live in South Capitol and a lot of people plan parties around the parade, have family over, or BBQ on the back porch. Those chairs are a sign of a healthy community.

Excellently worded

Those chairs are indeed signs of a healthy community.

I'm with you I think they

I'm with you I think they are ugly and trashy as hell. I have talked to a lot of people who think it is weird too. If you want to set up your chair do it the morning of...that still gives you hours and hours of prep time.

I also, don't think the chairs will stop people from having parties and enjoying the parade.

... this just screams...

... of a good prank...!

I have so many ideas of what you could do with those chairs in some dark night....

A recliner

I didn't want to upset you with just another lawn chair so I went ahead and drug my recliner down there. Scott Westerback - Oly

Hey Folks

The chairs are an Olympian tradition. Sure the chairs are mis-matched, cheap, and perhaps trashy but then again so is Lake Fair. There is a sublime beauty in both.

Please don't mess with the chairs. There is something innocent, naive, and quite touching in the phenomena. It speaks to the trust Olympians have in their community that they can put their chairs on the sidewalks and expect them to be there days later.

Reminds me...

of an old episode of The Simpsons where they set up chairs along the parade route, and sleep all night in them, but when they wake up in the morning they see that a giant stand of bleachers plopped right in front of them. LOL! So great.

I've thought of that

Why not have people have to sleep in the chairs if they want to post them out there. That's the way it is when you want to reserve a spot for a concert or a movie ticket etc. Also I have thought about going out early and staking my spot right in front of a chair.

theres so many other things

theres so many other things to worry about in the world why create any more?

Why does it matter if they

Why does it matter if they dont sit there all night? empty chairs dont seem that ugly to me.

I think you should definately bring out your ugly couch

next year. It would be a great addition. Sleeping outdooors, however, is considered "ugly" by some folks though, so you might not be able to use your hide-a-bed. But wouldn't that be cool...an Olympia slumber party! Maybe they could even close down some streets Friday night so people could BBQ different food and make different music and dance around in ugly, fiercely mismatched clothing. As Cowper said about variety, it "gives [life] all its flavour."

Sleeping outdooors

Brilliant idea! You got a talented mind my friend, you should be up for an award or sumthin. I can picture 'someone' pulling some old rusty moss covered trailer off of craigslist and painting a bunch of old tires around the front porch stage,...a couch with laundry sprinkled here and there would ad a nice trashy feeling.

Brilliant idea...Yeah!

I can finally check that off my "To do" list for today. Now I think I'll just treat myself to a cold beer on the Broho patio.
