So there seems to be a lot of roads closed out there due to flooding. Can folks report on them here and maybe we can help each other get around town until the waters subside?

Here's the map, folks should add to it.

CommunityWalk Map - Olympia Flooding

I just ran through several

I just ran through several large puddles (puddles really doesn't seem like the right word!) while going to and from the craft store (Michaels).  There was a really big one on Sleater-Kinney kind of by where the Jiffy Lube is but on the other side of the street.  There is a huge one on Pacific Ave kind of by PSE.  They have one lane marked off by a cone but the other lane is just as deep it seems.  There was also several "smaller" ones along Pacific Ave up by where Michaels is.

The Scott Lake Golf Course

is closed.  Lake PondThatDrains has reappeared in my backyard (the fairway).  The ducks and geese are loving it.  Drive careful out our way.  Drainage is not  real good and surface water comes from nowhere.

»

Westside

Is a mess!  Stay on main roads.  Side roads like 14th and 20th are viable but be careful.  Lots of standing water over a foot deep.  Access 101 from Mud Bay Rd. rather than Cooper Point.

If traveling 101N past Mud Bay Rd. be ready for delays and possbile closures at the 101 / State Route 8 split.  Madrona to Steamboat to 101N may be a better bet.

Does anyone

know how to set up one of those maps so that we all can update it and have it displayed here? I think having a visual would be helpful.

Frappr

Try Frappr - I know there are other map applications out there but don't know much about them.

Cooper Point Rd./Cedrona/Madera/TESC Area

There is a lake, literally, at the entrance to Cedrona/Madera.  The only way to get in or out is go through Madera out past the TESC college housing and loop back to Kaiser.  There were 3 tractor trailer tow trucks pulling out cars and one car is nose down in the water & water is running over the hood & windshield of it!

20th St. off Cooper Point going towards Division is now closed off right before the turn to LP Brown elementary.  There is a car buried in water partially blocking the lane going towards Handy Pantry/Division St. and police were coning off the road.

Cooper Point is flooded over at the Goldcrest entrance and the road to Hansen Elem. & Marshall Middle schools.

My kiddo at Capital said there were only about 10 people in her classes of 30+ because most of the kids were out on Steamboat and couldn't get in.

She also said her best friend out on Delphi Rd. is being evacuated by the fire department due to flooding and she couldn't get to school either.

It's a zoo out there!  I only ventured out because Mr. Onry bought me a 50 inch HD Plasma to hang over my fireplace in the family room yesterday for Christmas and I needed to trade in my old cable box for a HD/DVR box!  I must be a slave to TV!

Hubby went into Dupont for work today and said if you can swim through Olympia going North, the highways are fine but not to leave town and try & get back in because I-5 on to 101 is a total parking lot, probably due to the mudslide down towards Steamboat.

Coming home from Comcast, I was thinking today might be a great day to get out & do some Christmas shopping because nobody else will be out!  LOL!

Cooper Point & Walnut/14th

Cooper Point & Walnut/14th is a big lake to both the North and West. Cars can still make it through, but just barely.

From the City of Olympia website

http://www.olympiawa.gov/newsfaqs/newsreleases/floodingroadway.htm

Motorists are advised the following streets are experiencing flooding due to rain.

Road Closed: West Bay Drive between Brawn Avenue NW and Raft Avenue NW, is closed to all through traffic due to flooding. This is a result of Schneider Creek experiencing high water conditions and flooding.

Flooding Roadways: Public Works street crews have placed warning signs due to flooding at the below locations. Motorists are advised to take alternate routes.

  • Cooper Point Road and Capitol Mall Drive intersection is currently flooding.
  • Evergreen Park Drive south to Lakeridge Drive is currently experiencing water over roadway. Motorists are advised to avoid this area.
  • Cooper Point Road from Black Lake Blvd to Harrison Avenue

Motorists are reminded:

  • Always obey and do not go around “road closed” signs. They are there for your protection.
  • If you see excessive water in the roadway, avoid the area if possible.
  • Never drive through flowing water, a foot of water can float most cars.
  • Keep an emergency kit in your car.
  • Listen to the radio for traffic updates, and follow recommended routes.
  • Avoid unnecessary trips.

Avoid Unnecessary Trips

Also - if you're the type of driver who is timid in these kinds of conditions then it's best to stay off the road. Everybody needs to remain cautious but during my lunch break there were too many people who just didn't know what they were doing. They'd be stopped while they look around, they'd wait twenty seconds after the light turned green before moving, they're driving 10mph when that's not necessary.

This has nothing to do with me or any other impatient driver being in a hurry - I drove 25 in a 35 for example - it has everything to do with overly timid drivers contributing to the hazards.

Everyone be careful and stay out of this mess if at all possible.

Please give me a second grace. Please give me a second face. I've fallen far down, the first time around, now I just sit on the ground in your way.

If you're coming to Ken Lake

Don't go near Compton. It's a lake. Also don't go in the woods as all the paths have become rivers.

I'm not familiar

with how to set up the interactive maps, plus I have to run errands and don't have time to learn, does anyone have that knowledge that would be willing to create us a flood map?
»

Could someone please try this Community Map:

http://www.communitywalk.com/olympia/wa/olympia_flooding/map/193621

Please attempt to add another point to the map. It appears to have communal editing.
»

I've registered on communitywalk...

...but I don't see how to add to the map. Anybody know?

Budd Inlet is really high

I walked along Percival Landing during high tide (12:47 p.m.) and the water was up to the bottom of the boardwalk. I wish I'd had a camera. It was truly incredible. East Bay was less impressive; I think the banks are a little higher there than the boardwalk is, plus it was a little after high tide. I went out intending to de-leaf any storm drains I encountered. Some of them responded well to the clearing, but many were open and just plain full (some up to a foot deep!). The Olympian reports that LOTT inadvertently (?) dumped raw sewage into Budd Inlet last night because they were way over capacity. I guess it's time to build a wall and pump the water out, huh?

Perhaps stormwater management will

Ranch House BBQ

swept away.
»

?

Can you elaborate on this? Did you see it happen? Is this some kind of joke I'm not in on?

CNN.com's

Front page has a picture of Ranch House BBQ in shambles.

Read all about it

right here.

I always meant to go there

But I never did.

I can't add to the map, but I hear Delphi is pretty messy

water and debris on the roadway, but passable. The creeks are really high. Maybe Brodie will tell us more when he finishes bailing out his basement.

NOAA upgraded its forecast of maojor flooding

to "record severity" flooding on the Chehalis and Skookumchuck.

adding points on the map

Anybody figure out how to do this yet?

I don't think this map is communal

Is there another map program we can use? This one seems a bit slow anyways.

Our creek has risen!

The creek running behind our house, has risen about 3.5 FT since this started. It's pretty cool watching nature take its course. Of course it would be a different story if it was flowing in town.

I found out the hard way this moring that 101 S. was closed. After sitting in traffic for an hour and travelling only 1 Mile I was able to turn around and head home.

I-5 to close near Chehalis

I-5 in Chehalis Closed

From WSDOT:

http://www.wsdot.wa.gov/News/Update/I5-Closure-milepost-68-88.htm

I-5 in Chehalis Closed Due to Flooding

I-5 is closed from exit 88 near Grand Mound (approximately 20 miles south of Olympia) to exit 68 (11 miles south of Chehalis) due to flooding. The freeway will remain closed for at least 36 hours and likely longer while crews wait for the Chehalis River (at milepost 77-79) and Dillenbaugh Creek (at milepost 74) to recede.

How to add points:

Click on "Olympia Flooding" in the lower left corner. On the new window, click "Add Marker".
»

Nope...

You only have that option because *you* created the map, I believe.

Bummer

That's why I requested testing before it was posted. :[

Hrm. It must lock onto your IP because I don't have an account with them, so it was impossible for me to test.
»

Can't add markers.

There's no "Olympia Flooding" link. Can you edit the permissions on the map, Logarithm?

> Say something interesting or say nothing at all. <
»

Fixed

OK, I made an account there and changed the settings. Now you can add new points and edit existing ones. You must have an account on that website.

Sorry for the confusion, there was no way for me to test before, so I appreciate the feedback.

Thurston County Emergency Information

I just found this on the county's website. It has lots of good info on road closures and advisories.
