Food Mart

Food Mart with signs, including one saying, "Peace on Earth"

Peace on Earth, wouldn't that be great! So, it's cigarettes, ATM, lotto, energy drinks, beer, wine, and Peace on Earth.

Truth be told, I took the series of three shots that compose this panorama quite hastily. I was made uncomfortable when a woman stamped up to me and angrily condescended me for not asking her permission prior to taking photographs of the area in which she was sitting (she was initially sitting on the curb, and at the time this picture was taken she was leaning against the Volvo.) She wanted to know why I didn't just take the picture closer to the store front if I what I was interested in was the "Peace on Earth" sign. I explained that I wanted to get the whole store front in the frame. I told her that it was a public space, especially since I was shooting from the sidewalk. She was angry. I could smell alcohol on her breath. People have a lot going on in their lives. There is a lot of emotional grief and stress. I can understand how being photographed might seem intrusive. But it is too bad. It would be better if everyone was happy to be photographed, because of a desire to share their joy with the world... There are a lot of people without enough joy. Too many people without enough joy. There might even be a lot of people without any joy. Maybe someday it will be better.

Of course, there are certainly other factors than a "lack of joy" for peoples' dissent of being photographed. For example, in this case, I think the woman's fear of being reported to authorities was a clearer concern. She said something like, fine, go report me to whoever you're going to. Which seemed to be a paranoid reaction, but maybe she has reason to worry.

And she was probably right: I probably should have asked permission to take the photos beforehand.

I went there to buy some Peace on Earth

But the price tag was missing. In negotiations with the cashier we couldn't reach a settlement so the peace talks broke down.

Why do they shelve that stuff right next to the motor oil?

price tag was missing

Price tag was missing? - that is exactly the problem! What is the price of Peace on Earth? It must be astronomical, somewhere in the region of $999,999,999,999,999,999.ºº, maybe?

It's a lot of DOUGH! But we gotta start somewhere, right?

An idea: put the tax $$ from lotto, cigarettes, beer, wine, motor oil, etc. toward the Peace on Earth Fund.

You have my permission to

You have my permission to photograph me anytime you want. I just better not find any drunken bathroom videos on Youtube.

As always, great picture!

Red meat is NOT bad for you. Now blue-green meat, THAT'S bad for you!

welcome to my 'hood

This is part of the real street life in Olympia...

...this serves as a club, kitchen, bar, and "hook-up spot" for anyone who does not have enough money or correct clothing to get into a restaurant/bar/club in downtown.

The alleys are toilets near this store & also flop houses...

...and on any given night, the center of much drama.

Try it at night.

When we were living at 1009

When we were living at 1009 (BRAC) and the power went out, that's the first place we went (mostly out of boredom and curiosity). Several other people showed up there, too. It was like, "How long do you think this will last?", and, "Well, here's the future for ya!", and "Hey, can I get some hot water for tea?", and, "Do you guys sell candles?". It was a great neighborhood moment in what I had thought was not a real neighborhood. Just goes to show, mixed-use medium-density corridors do have neighborliness. Yay!

Once...

One time I was in Berkeley sitting in front of Amoeba Records smoking a cigarette with two "street kids" when a bently pulled up and some guy started taking pictures of all of us sitting there. Not wanting to photographed I covered my face and told the other people they might want to hide their faces.

One of the girls got really upset. She jumped up, pretty unexpectedly, and grabbed the camera from the guy and started smashing his face with it. He started screaming and she slammed the camera into the back windshield as the car sped off. The two girls hightailed it out of there.

The truth is, you can't just go photographing anyone you want. You certainly don't deserve to get beaten up and have your camera destroyed, but at least beware that some people REALLY don't like having their picture taken.

Put the pieces together. Poor women with substance abuse problems + strange man with camera taking pictures without permission = very possible abuse or exploitation scenario.  Not everyone wants to share your joy. Open your mind a little to how other people perceive things and you might avoid encounters like that.

encounter

Yes, I consider myself fortunate to have escaped the encounter without having my face, or the window of my Bentley, smashed in. Thanks for the advice though. I will make an effort to "open my mind a little."...

A point of clarification: in this case, I was not particularly attempting to share my joy. Sorry if my account suggests otherwise. This photograph and narrative were an attempt to document a social scene. The juxtaposition of the "Peace on Earth" sign with the atm, , lotto, cigarette, beer, and wine advertisements (e.g. "our daily red, organic and sulfite free, 750mL $5.99") - was the reason for my interest. The encounter with the angry woman made it more interesting to me, especially the fact that she was obviously partaking in some of the aforementioned advertised products. It leads me to wonder how the consumption of those products might contribute to, or detract from, "Peace on Earth"... This image is a statement about the place of drugs in our community. What social constructs tend to promote chemical abuse? How does chemical abuse fit into the larger social construct? That's what I was attempting to get at. It's a social documentary, and a critique. It's meant to be provocative.

Sorry if it offends. It's reality.

Time Gas Station

Does anyone know the story behind the removal of the TIME gas station?

»

i do i do i do!

for the one billionth time i shall unveil the tale of the time oil deal! Time Oil sold all of their assets to another company, the name of which I cannot recall. The owner of the store owns the store but still leases the land upon which the store is built from this new company. The company who bought Time had to come in and remove all of the gear that Time Oil had on the property. The owner of the store is not interested in purchasing the land as the ground is indeed dirty, but not from the tanks that were recently dug up. The ground is dirty from previous tanks that were in the ground that were leaky. Buying this land would prove to be a ridiculously expensive investment as cleanup costs are very high. The only way for the property to carry gas again is to have the property cleaned up. In the meantime, we are happy to have the store here and serving the community. Thanks for coming in! -Your Friendly Clerk-

leaky tanks? rising gas prices?

You should go in and ask next time you're near by.
