Found this while surfing around. I can't say that I am surprised, but I hope that she resurfaces soon.

Waris Dirie, a former model turned women's rights campaigner, has gone missing in Brussels, her manager Walter Lutschinger said Friday.

She has not been seen since the early hours of Wednesday morning when police saw her getting into a taxi after a mixup over a hotel room, Lutschinger said in a telephone interview.

Somali-born Dirie gained international fame as a model posing in Chanel ads and acting in a James Bond film before launching her campaign against female genital mutilation in 1996.

She recounted her own experiences of suffering genital mutilation as a child in the book "Desert Flower" that became an international best-seller.

Dirie was due to speak to two conferences on women's rights organized by the European Union in Brussels this week, including one Thursday attended by Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice.

UPDATE

She was found hours after police announced they were launching a nationwide search for her. She had last been seen getting into a cab after a mix-up over a hotel in the early hours of Wednesday.

Prosecutor's spokeswoman Estelle Arpigny said Dirie was being questioned by police about the disappearance and appeared to be in good health.

She declined to give further details, saying it was unclear what had happened since Dirie vanished after leaving a Brussels nightclub.
I am very glad she has been found alive. I will be interested to hear the story of what happened.

I followed the link, and the story has been updated to say that she's been found alive and well. She's being questioned about what happened but no details have been released. Perhaps your tags can be updated.

likewise

Larry coined it nicely. I think the tag should be something like "extremism".

Maybe I should put "Catholic" as a tag for all of my blogs? :)

Sorry Rob, you get stuck with "Atheist"

I don't feel stuck with atheist. I feel free with atheist.

Nitpicking

This is great. Now we can start nitpicking everybody's tags. It will help us ignore the subject. Don't cha love progress?

Extreme examples

Army of God (Warning their website contains graphic photos)

The Church of God with Signs Following is the name applied to Pentecostal holiness churches that engage in the practice of snake handling and drinking poison in their religious worship services, based on Mark 16:17-18.

 Just a couple of examples.

Many people think circumcision is genital mutilation, also.

Voodoo is out there a ways, as are many other religions.

Update you tags dude

Why Gug?

Islam seems an appropriate tag. So do you just want more tags, or the removal of Islam?

If Islam is the "appropriate" tag

Then "Christian" should be the appropriate tag for Fred Phelps.  Unless you want the removal of Christianity, JT.

Think about it, is Christianity the operative word of Fred Phelps actions?

»

Appropriate?

We disagree. I don't think Olyblog should be a platform for bigotry.

Just because you say it's

Just because you say it's bigotry does not make it so.

Just when you had a couple of people trying to understand, Jeff

You post that piece of stupidity - the "disclaimer" is what I speaking about.

Just the point that you feel the need says mountains about your intentions on this blog.

Thanks for the warning.  I'll avoid all your posts until you finally succeed in permanent exclusion from the community.

Unfinished business

Jeff has some unfinished business to deal with anyway. I, for one, really want to hear what he has to say to Tschida and JT and the rest of us about the "God Bless Israeli Bulldozers" sign he so proudly exhibits in public. That sign not only reflects badly on conservatives, it reflects badly on Olympia.
»

Steven,I really do not

Steven,

I really do not regard this stuff as any "unfinished business" that I have to deal with. It's more of a pot that others have decided to start stirring again. Fine. Please remember that you and others have asked.

Thank you,

Jeff Brigham

It unfinished

as far as a wide variety of people in the OlyBlog world are concerned. Doors have been opened for you to accept responsibility and recognize how hurtful and damaging the "God Bless Israeli Bulldozers" sign has been. Can you deal with that without blaming others?
»

You don't really have a choice.

This is a community, and some of your fellow community members have a very serious problem with that sign and your unwillingness to rebuke it. You alone stirred the pot when you first held up that sign. Only you can calm the pot, by apologizing. Actions have consequences, don't you know.
»

Gugliemo,

Some of my fellow community members can have whatever opinions or "problems" as they like. As I can have opinions or "problems" as I like. I have never posted any photo of that sign on Olyblog. If you have objections to seeing it on Olyblog, contact the people who have posted it. I have nothing to apologize for. I would not suggest waiting for an apology either.

I don't like many opinions that are presented on Olyblog. But as part of the community, I must learn to work around that. So must you, don't you know.

Jeff Brigham

Wow.

There's your answer, Tschida, JT, Rebecca, and everyone else.

I have never posted any photo of that sign on Olyblog. If you have objections to seeing it on Olyblog, contact the people who have posted it.

See. It isn't his fault at all. What were we thinking?

»

Oh, no.

You honestly do have something to apolize for. Your pariah status is not, as you'd like to think, about your opinions. It is about your ugly, cruel behavior. Enjoy your future attention seeking at Olyblog. It's still seems, unfortunately, to be rather fertile ground for you. I, however, won't be a party to it any longer.
»

If my use of that

If my use of that "disclaimer" is so upsetting to you, I will avoid using it in the future. I truly do wish that you would be equally upset when we have docents abusing their authority.

Also, please examine the posts above again. Tschida posts an article and instead of discussion of the article, we have nitpicking about a tag he put on it. I have noticed this on several instances when Tschida posts articles. He could post "The sky is blue and water is wet" and a number of people here would avoid any discussion or conversation and instead immediately nitpick something to attack him on. Let's work on that problem also.

Thank you,

Jeff Brigham

Huh?

"He could post "The sky is blue and water is wet" and a number of people here would avoid any discussion or conversation and instead immediately nitpick something to attack him on."

You're just making crap up now.  Tsch has posted a number of "sky is blue"  posts without any nitpicking.  Do you have examples otherwise? This is called projection.

Is the practice that Ms Dirie,

campaigns against a practice of Islam? Or is the basis more from Somali influence? If it is Islam or a sect of Islam then the tag is appropriate. Perhaps more tags would be better though. If it is more Somali, which is where I thought the practice came from, then Islam might not be the best choice.

Just like if the topic was about male circumcision, perhaps Jewish, Christian, etc. might be appropriate.

Not much about Phelps is Christian, so I don't see the link. Like back to my orginal question, if female genital mutilation, or female circumcision (as it frequently and incorrectly is referred to)is a practice of Islam, reporting it in a tag is not bigotry.

»

Well, there goes the subjective meter again

According to Phelps and his followers they are Christian.

I would say that this woman wasn't following anything about Muslim tradition, unless I'm reading entirely wrong.
