So, I went and ordered a new rear sight for my Flattop AR and had to do a little bit of sighting in and put the rifle though it's paces. The following are pictures of myself and a friend doing this.
Given all of the argumentative topics, and topics about guns that seem....removed, I decided a thread talking about what I've been up to seemed appropriate. Hopefully some will enjoy this.
These are pictures of firearms. Don't look if you are offended by such.......you have been warned.
Paper-target Work
Different angle
My Friend, showing me how it's done
And then presenting some of the finer points of pistol marksmanship
Good times were had by all! Plus the new rear sight worked great.

Right on!!
Submitted by JT on Sun, 02/24/2008 - 6:01pm.get an Eotech sight for that bad boy!! You won't regret it. The dept got them for our AR-15's, and it clearly is one of the best pieces of equipment they have gotten me.
So is your friend a regular shooter, or are you introducing a newbie to the sport!
Thanks for sharing.

I'm salivating over one
Submitted by Norm on Sun, 02/24/2008 - 6:03pm.That's a good amount of cash to drop though. What models do you guys use?
She is a shooter who's been out of practice for awhile, she also had not shot a handgun prior to Saturday...and she did really well.
Nice AR!!!
Submitted by security_six on Sun, 02/24/2008 - 6:38pm.Good choice on the buttstock. Don't know much about AR's, I'm a died in the wool eastern bloc weapons fan... I had about 20 GI mags I sold about 4 months ago....
What was the handgun?
Going out tomorow to blow off my mosin nagants and work out some kinks in my 10/22

Submitted by Norm on Mon, 02/25/2008 - 7:29pm.Cool
Submitted by security_six on Mon, 02/25/2008 - 7:42pm.I'm thinking about a MkII or III. Just picked up a Jennings .22 today :-p

Now you need to start
Submitted by The Fire Inside on Sun, 02/24/2008 - 8:22pm.Now you need to start shooting at targets between 250m and 300m...
Me or Norm?
Submitted by security_six on Sun, 02/24/2008 - 8:27pm.My old relics are very happy at 250-300m, but I could never dream of engaging a target at 300m with an AR...
Someone told me the mosin nagant is sighted in to shoot "Minute of Nazi" :-)

Norm, but...
Submitted by The Fire Inside on Sun, 02/24/2008 - 8:34pm.We have to qualify with an M16/M4 (with iron sights) on a range with 300m targets as a part of it. You can skip the 300m targets and still qualify (usually there's only about 5-6 that pop-up), but I normally shoot at them.
I do pretty decent at that range, about 50%-75%.
I know
Submitted by security_six on Sun, 02/24/2008 - 8:36pm.A lot of varmint hunting is done at that range, so I know the 5.56 round is up to it, just seems like it wouldn't have a lot of push at that distance. Of course if you can hit the target at 300m then anything closer is doomed...
I wish I could say I was highly accurate at 300m, but I'm not. 150, 200 tops. Well, something to "shoot for"

Been there, done that :)
Submitted by Norm on Mon, 02/25/2008 - 7:34pm.It's been about 10 years though, and my eyesight was MUCH better then.
I shot %100 during basic on my first go round, and missed a 300m target while competing against one other trainee and a drill sgt the second time around. She (yep, I said she) had a record there for shooting 3 perfect courses in a row during basic.
My father's target grade AR-15
Submitted by JT on Sun, 02/24/2008 - 9:58pm.is a nail driver out to 600yds. Great for varmit shooting, i.e. P-dogs.

300 meters,
Submitted by JT on Mon, 02/25/2008 - 8:00pm.thats for kindergarteners. Try 1500 meters! All in a 12" pie plate.

I call foul
Submitted by security_six on Mon, 02/25/2008 - 8:04pm.And demand proof of this feat!
Otherwise you are guilty of intelectual dishonesty and should be banned :-p
And i was feeling good shooting an old propane tank at 100 yards today with the 91/30...
BTW, is that 1500m with iron sights or optics?
"Safety is a tyrant's tool; no one can be against safety."--Unknown
Oh optics my friend,
Submitted by JT on Mon, 02/25/2008 - 8:11pm.actually, I cheated. I switched the conversation to a Remington model 700 with the heavy barrel, and chambered for the .308. Leupold 8.5 to 25 scope with a 50mm objective lens. Jewel trigger, but otherwise factory. Using Blackhill ammo, 168 grain moly-coated bullet. The gun consistently shoots sub 1.4 MOA. Don't call for my removal from the blog for intellectual dishonesty...
My father has access to a 2200 yard range, in Eastern Washington on a wheat ranch. I only get to shoot there once or twice a year. 1500 yard/meters, is about my comfort zone with that cartridge to be consistent. Clearly it will reach out over 2000 yards, but it will get flaky.

I was speaking in jest
Submitted by security_six on Mon, 02/25/2008 - 8:17pm.about removal, I'm sorry it didn't come across that way :-)
I'm freaking jealous about that Remington 700! You'll be nice and comfy when the zombies come!
Do you roll your own, or just use factory ammo?
"Safety is a tyrant's tool; no one can be against safety."--Unknown
Both,
Submitted by JT on Mon, 02/25/2008 - 8:24pm.rolling my own is for entertainment and experimentation, factory is for consistency.

I need to start shooting rifles more
Submitted by Norm on Mon, 02/25/2008 - 8:47pm.BTW,
Submitted by JT on Mon, 02/25/2008 - 8:48pm.apparently my tongue in cheek response to your comment about intelectual dishonesty didn't come through. I was playing too.
As for handloads, my post didn't read clear either. I'm able to get sub-1/4 MOA with handloads, and only can get about 3/8 MOA with factory. But the real issue is loading enough ammo by hand, verses getting it factory. I like handloading for fun, but not for volume.

Kind of anal with my loads,
Submitted by JT on Mon, 02/25/2008 - 8:54pm.one at a time.

Submitted by security_six on Mon, 02/25/2008 - 8:56pm.On a seperate note, I think you are right, one at a time for handloads is best.
