Shut Down Downtown TACOMA!
Against I.C.E!
Against Raids!
November 9th &10th

author: Smash Tacoma I.C.E

We want to show the powers that be, that an immigrant detention center will not be tolerated in our community and in our region. This will be in solidarity with the No Borders camp that will be happening the same week down south. We plan on sending a very visible, clear message by not allowing business as usual to happen on these days.

Tacoma, WA has the biggest Homeland Security Detention Center in the North West! They have been tearing apart families, separating children born here from their parents and loved ones that were not. Sixty-four people have died in these detention centers since 2004, and just recently about three hundred people were made ill from the food given in the Tacoma Detention Center. We want to show solidarity with those at the No Borders camp down south who will be resisting the wall, detentions, capitalism and the institutions as well as trade agreements that are responsible for displacing millions of people around the world. We have had enough of this in our communities! Enough of these secret raids! We want this facility OUT of Tacoma!

Downtown Will NOT have business as usual! We plan on shutting down the downtown area of Tacoma to send a very clear message that will be heard by the powers that be, that we do not want this detention facility any where near us and our communities.

There will be a designated green zone at S. 17th and Pacific on the corner and in the grassy park across from the art museum. In this area only 100% LEGAL forms of protest will be taking place! Bring puppets, musical instruments, signs, banners, creativity and passion. The rest of down town will be open to diverse and creative tactics!

But remember the Green zone is 100% Legal and those in the Green should not feel obligated to join or participate in anything going on out side of that park and corner. But if you feel comfortable, fed up, and ready, feel free to join in or plan your own actions or marches with your organizations and/or friends and loved ones! Affinity groups welcome! Peaceful Protest Welcome! Street Theater Welcome! Direct Action Welcome!

Community members, immigrants, students, workers, radicals, every one of us! We all want to show Tacoma some thing diverse, effective and creative. None of us want this place in Tacoma or in our communities, and we all have different ways of protesting and resisting these institutions and laws that effect all of our lives. Lets support one another, show solidarity, and make this place, that we cant stand, disappear.

Plan on being at S.17th and Pacific at around 11 o'clock am on Friday November 9th and Saturday November 10th. This will be the green zone. Other forms of protest and resistance can start when ever and where ever those who plan them decide.

goodluck & stay safe!

Hola All,

I just wanted to say that stopping biz in TacWA WILL DO NOTHING about this Federal installation, or even raise awareness-- >my opinion<

This facility is a "done deal" and it is here to stay (and that IS a bummer). BE CAREFUL!

i agree

this event, to me, is more about divergent groups coming together to stand for justice. We, speaking for myself and the mouse in my pocket, need liberals and even the mushy moderates. They give us room to really express ourselves.

I posted this to inform everyone that this inclusive event was happening, not a some sort of rallying cry for revolution. I think everyone involved understands that this action alone won't stop anything. This action can be a spark that ignites a flame however. The more sparks, the more chances we have to start a fire.

Just posting the announcement

has raised awareness. Thanks. Mushy?

"Mushy moderates" is the

"Mushy moderates" is the centrist version of "compassionate conservatives" or "bleeding-heart liberals".

And Rob, I don't know how you concluded that "Join us!" isn't a rallying cry, but that's hilarious.

I think he just forgot

the title of his post.

What happened to

being really great with people?

Why not just have an

Why not just have an immigration free for all? Doesn't matter if these people broke the law in coming here, now does it. Why should they be expected to obey the law like the rest of us? C.

One of the great non sequiturs of the left is that, if the free market doesn't work perfectly, then it doesn't work at all-- and the government should step in.

Not sure that's what rob is talking about

but, oh well.

asking rhetorical questions will get you nowhere.

If all immigrants were deported today, as i it seems you want it, how do you think your quality of life would fare? Why do you think Bush wants amnesty? Our economy depends on their cheap labor.
»

Hmmm

Why do you think Bush wants amnesty? Our economy depends on their cheap labor.

Which is wrong, correct? So why not kick them back to their own country? We would learn to be a little more self-sufficient and they would not be abused by dubya and his people...sounds like a win-win to me.

What I want and don't want.

I don't want all illegal immigrants deported today or tomorrow. If they are caught in so much as a traffic violation up to murder, I want them deported. If they surrender to the authorities, and declare that they are here illegally, they should be allowed a path to citizenship. If they do that and they are wanted for any crime, they should be deported. If they are not wanted for anything, they should pay a single sum fine. 5 thousands dollars for the crime of illegally entering our country and be made to cover the cost of the administration their citizenship. They should attend classes just as legal immigrants had to in the past, and they should learn English, and pass an exam demonstrating a basic level of fluency. Why does Bush support amnesty? I don't know. He is wrong. I don't really care why. The amnesty bill was killed in congress twice. Pretty clear message if you ask me. Does our economy stand on a single pillar of cheap labor to sustain itself? No. Do you suggest as much? I think so. But then you would not bother to read anything that challenged your political beliefs, thus altering your perspective, near as I can tell. C.

Tsch...

Why bother with that last sentence? Stating those kinds of assumptions pollutes the atmosphere of Olyblog.

If they become legal

If they become legal citizens, then they have the right to be paid minimum wage, and nobody in the ruling/ownership class wants that. And yes, absolutely, capitalism (our economy)is most certainly standing on a pillar of cheap labor, that's how it works, that's how people make money in capitalism. Before capitalism there was serfdom, do you think that those with power to change things would just let all those workers free without putting a system of control in place? That wouldn't be a wise business decision at all. I read things that challenge my beliefs all the time, usually I can do so by picking up just about any newspaper or magazine. I research and read about how capitalism and forms of government work so that I may create a better community around myself without them.

It is a challenge offered to rebut things like...

"They have been tearing apart families, separating children born here from their parents and loved ones that were not." "[P]ollutes the atmosphere"; that is funny. You don't agree so it "pollutes".

Tsch, please disagree

the pollution occurs when you make negative assumptions about you fellow posters. No, please, disagree until the cows come home. I have no probelm with that.
