Ken Balsley, who I'm pretty sure used to write for the Lacey weekly newspaper when there was a weekly Lacey newspaper, reflects on the recent happenings at the Olympian:

Layoffs at The Olympian means that effective control of the local newspaper has been transfered to Tacoma and will operate out of the The (Tacoma) News Tribune offices.

Not only have 17 Olympian staffers been layed off but several others have been transfered to Tacoma where they will operate out of that sister publication.  Those transfered from Olympia to Tacoma include the Advertising Manager and the Classified Advertising Manager, thus moving those operations out of town.

...

Since its acqusition of those newspapers in April 06, the company has been consolidating its operations.  A significant piece of the action is controlled by The (Tacoma) News Tribune which staffers at The Olympian refer to as “the mother ship."

Read the entire post, its pretty good.

Since Ken doesn't enable comments of at his blog, I'll leave them open here.

The number of inaccuracies in that article...

...makes my head spin.

FF, tell us about the inaccuracies. What do you mean and how do you know?

I can share the information

I can share the information but not the source from which it came. It comes to me direct from a current employee. I don't want them to get reprimanded.

1.) The Olympian's advertising department is not being controlled from Tacoma. Those who are being moved to Tacoma are going to serve both newspapers. Neither newspaper is going to have complete control over both ad departments. They're going to share key employees meaning that both departments are going to be managed from both locations. The same is happening to the online and circulation departments.

2.) McClatchy owns four daily newspapers in Washington, not seven.

3.) The news room lost three reporters and a photographer as far as I know.

4.) The mother ship comment is weird. I know several employees at The Olympian and I have never heard any of them call Tacoma's operation by that name. In fact up until now the two properties didn't have much to do with one another outside of sharing articles.

5.) Circulation has not been shipped overseas. How would that even work? Circulation is the group responsible for delivering the newspaper. Customer service, which is part of circulation, has been shipped overseas but that happened months ago.

6.) The lot next to the building is up for sale because The Olympian doesn't have any plans to develop anything there. It doesn't make financial sense for them to hang onto it.

For as much as some people complain about how The Olympian has trouble keeping their facts straight it doesn't seem like anyone else around here does a better job.

FF:

Welcome to OlyBlog.

I just want to thank you for adding the missing pieces to the post above. That's how citizen journalism works -- everyone has a piece of the puzzle. The blog helps us put the pieces together. I know it may feel like "people don't keep their facts straight," but that only applies if there is just a single contributor. In our CJ model, journalism is much more like a conversation with many voices. I find that collectively, we come to a much better understanding of most events and issues than any model that relies on a single expert or reporter.

So, thanks for adding your voice!

Beware the terrible simplifiers.
