Here are some pictures taken Tuesday May 13th, 2008 from around town. Included is a picture from Artisans Café, a 'mouseover' processing comparison of Capitol Lake, and several photos from the Washington State Capitol Conservatory green house (which has been downsized) including a 115+ year old cactus, as well as flags being flown at half-staff on the Capitol Campus to commemorate the death of an active duty military person:

Too bad about the Conservatory
Submitted by Guglielmo on Wed, 05/14/2008 - 12:14pm.Conservatory
Submitted by Robert Whitlock on Wed, 05/14/2008 - 1:34pm.Yeah, it's too bad about the downsizing / consolidation. All the orchids have been removed. There is an informational placard in the green house with more details about the changes. I neglected to take a picture or notes though.
It seems like the Conservatory would be a great candidate for some green building. Maybe if the glass were to be replace with double pane windows? (that would be expensive)
But on the more practical side, for heating purposes, solar panels and a passive hot water system (black pipes using solar heating while running off a large reservoir tank to maintain system heat). There are ways to greatly increase heating efficiency, so that it doesn't require so much gas or electricity to heat the place. That coupled with modern windows...
I agree, it would be nice if the state would continue investment, and increase investment, in the Conservatory if that is what it takes to make it work in terms of energy efficiency and long-term costs.
It's doomed in any case
