If OlyBlog is a horrible, censoring, fascist, toxic enclave of arrogant whining hippies - why are you here?

Why would anyone choose to spend time flogging away at others? If the docents here are so wretched why on earth would you stick around?

Or is it that OlyBlog isn't all those supposedly negative things and the docents here aren't wretched and that you actually get your kicks fussing and fuming at us? Is it fun to make us jump? Does crying "censorship" make your day?

Hey, ask me some time why I'm not a docent here anymore.

And don't tell me that Rick is this or that because at this point it doesn't help the conversation at all. Eventually that is only a tactic of diversion. Reminds me of children who when called on their behavior say "But Sally did it first!". I don't care. One issue at a time. And besides, if Rick or Rob or I or whoever here is so awful, why the f*ck do you stick around?

The web is wide and wonderous. You could set up your own blog, personal or community. You don't have to be here.

If you want to play in this playground it really isn't that difficult to figure out how this playground works. One clue - if you are told to stop hitting someone, you stop hitting them. Even if you think that your action does not fit the definition of hitting. Even if you can point to other folks supposedly doing the same thing.

I'm well aware here that my words might be twisted all around. But I can't help but try.

Content is Queen

Now that I wrote that I want to get to the good stuff.

Which is to encourage folks to blog. Blog about local happenings and observations. Blog about wider issues and events.

Use all this energy to produce content.

»

YES!

"Use all this energy to produce content."

»

I second enpen's YES!

Thanks Sarah.

Sarah

We basically said the same thing, only you beat me to it. Must be because we are both Patches pals.
»

Patches Pals?

Man, you guys must be older than dirt. Like me. Yes, content is queen. A little more buioding up and a little less tearing down would be nice.

Ancient

I actually shared a stage with the wonderful J.P. Patches for a few seconds under those extremely hot lights. I was part of a Brownie troop.

Even better, I saw him catching a quick smoke in the employee locker room, he had his full makeup on too. I've never been the same since.

This Boris Baddie says "WOW!"

Don't let Rob catch you saying what you said, he's trying to crack down on that. Don't worry, I'll eat the soap for you if he tries anything.

»

No soap eating allowed

Makes for unfortunate bubbles. And it is so difficult to clean up afterwards.

Seriously though, if a docent asks me to tone things down, I'm going to listen.

Yeah that.  You took the

Yeah that.  You took the words right out of my mouth, Sarah.

Good points, Sarah

It is kind of mysterious why so many people stick around to complain about how they're oppressed.
»

I guess we need to know what

content is approved.

about 70% of the time my content becomes a target of controversy for some.

The shortest list, what's allowed or what's not.

Uh...content?

I really don't think it's content. It's the nature of the delivery. For instance, I could have said, "No one is complaining about content you idiot." Same content, different delivery.

I think the jury is still out

on some subjects and their appropriateness for the blog and "community". I think that is what JT is getting at...I'm still curious myself.
»

What they said

I agree with both G and Norm here.

I think my main concern is behavior. Yes, the choice of content is important and yes I might be prone to reacting to particular content and not to others but underneath it all is some sort of core communication thingy that I'm trying to get at.

We are all human here and OlyBlog as an evolving community is going to have trends, clusters of interests, leanings and what have you. I don't think there is anything wrong with that. My concern is with how we talk to each other. And I see that as an issue that goes across content.

For example, I could be talking with someone who is also anti-war. But that doesn't mean automatically that everything is groovy, just because we agree content wise. Maybe they are telling me that I am oppressive and a big fat turkey head because I dare disagree with the use of a particular tactic. Disagreement is okay, but the name calling is not.

I think it is important that content be truthful

and authentic, factual, well-documented, linked.

Aside from delivery issues, I have issues with the publishing of disinformation. Even if it is done very sweetly, the content is still fraudulent and the dissemination of fraudulent information may do us all harm.

so what is the toned down way to confront fraudulent material?

If I simply say, "hey, this material is fraudulent." is that going to be seen as name-calling?

this goes back to blogging ethics, which I will post yet again, hat tip to Sarah:

The section I am most interested in, Weblog Ethics, is available online through her site. She proposes six rules for online publishers:

  1. Publish as fact only that which you believe to be true.
  2. If material exists online, link to it when you reference it.
  3. Publicly correct any misinformation.
  4. Write each entry as if it could not be changed; add to, but do not rewrite or delete, any entry.
  5. Disclose any conflict of interest.
  6. Note questionable and biased sources.

In terms of setting boundaries, are there penalties for bloggers who continually post information that is shown to be untrue?  Should a deliberate posting of something that is untrue be the basis for a strike?

»

If the material is incorrect, then say so and back it p

If someone repeatedly posts incorrect material, then it's fair to point out that pattern to the docents. Nothing wrong with that. People need to be held responsible for what they post.
»

Norm, people might complain about certain topics

but posting "unwelcome" topics is much different than just being a regular asshole.
»

regular asshole?

I was hoping you thought I was extraordinary :(

I'm assuming you aren't talking about me there though. If you are you should have an intervention with me :)

»

Norm, of course I am not taling about you.

There is only one person here who fits the bill and it's cerainly not you. We can all be ass's on occasion. But it takes special skills to do so on a regular basis. Sorry Norm. But you just don't have those skills.
