Some folks may have picked up that I'm leaving the docency in a couple of weeks, and I don't intend without leaving a replacement behind me. And, I'm nominating folks just to get the ball rolling, the discussion going, but I think these folks could do a pretty good job.

Gug. While he's not a front page regular, he's a steady hand in the comment threads and he can be guilted into turning his sharp mind on some local topics on a regular basis.

Epersonae (chad360's better half, aka Elaine). Same as above, not enough front paging, but what does is very good. Would bring a level of, what what do you call it, knowledge of actually running a website. Oh, yeah, we don't actually have much of that right now.

Chad360. While I have to be honest, his stream-oh-chad writing can leave me dragging behind the family blog sometimes, chad takes what we do here very seriously. To the point he buts heads with current docents, but I don't think that's particulary a bad thing.

Thad Curtz. While fairly new to here and someone I almost disagree with at all point, Thad is also steady and seems to have a fair interest in the overall topic of citizen journalism. He's also done lots of front page stuff, but centered on one topic in particular.

That's my core list, but other folks to come to mind include: Katherine and einmaleins.

So, how are we going to do this? I say come up with a list of nominees and vote from there. Whether we need two rounds depends on the size of the list.

So, nominate! And don't forget to nominate yourself if you're interested in the position, that's how I got the job.

not wilson, or I'm a Luddite

If somehow wilson is nominated and is elected a docent, then I will not only stop contributing to Olyblog, not only will I stop reading Olyblog, I will turn off the internet all-together. And electricity.

Because, it obviously cannot be trusted at that point.

Wow

That's a bit harsh lol

I don't think now's the time

Thanks for thinking of me as a possible docent. I am interested in contributing more to OlyBlog in the long run, and it's right that the citizen journalism/local sustainability side of OlyBlog is what I'd like to contribute to.

However, I'm also pretty busy with the isthmus issue, at least until September. (I don't mean to suggest that being politically engaged is a reason not to be a docent, although it obviously means you'd have to try hard to keep those roles clearly separated.) I don't think it's wise to add another project to my calendar right now.

Less concretely, I feel as if I just got here; it seems important for a docent to have a better sense of who's who, community norms, what's been leading up to what comes up, and so on than I do at this point.

Since it sounds as if there are a number of promising possible new docents, I don't think I'm the one this time. Maybe next year, or if and when it seems as if there's nobody else that will do.

P.S. I am an amateur programmer and I do know a good deal about software (including Drupal, which I assume is a second-cousin of whatever open source system OlyBlog's running on). If practical tasks or projects came up that the docents wanted some help with I might well be happy to work on some particular assignments.

Best,
Thad

I second Guglielmo...

What about Chia?

She hasn't been as active lately, but I enjoy her posts and she seems to be level-headed and non-confrontational, even when someone is being confrontational.
»

Wow...

Thank you for the nomination, JulieM, I look for your posts, as well. I'd like to learn more tech skills and would like to consider a role in that regard. Maybe I could assist epersonae at some level, if that works for her. I'm not sure about docent but maybe that would work out well with what I'd like to learn. I'm certainly invested in online community-building.

How about you, JulieM, would you like to be a docent? You've got a perspective not often represented and add an important voice to Olyblog. You are also here on a consistent basis :)

If agathafrye is interested in the position, I think she'd be a great candidate, as well as the others who have been mentioned. With experience teaching tech skills and also with dealing with the public, I can't help but think she'd be a great asset as an Olyblog docent.

It seems that the current docents are a bit overwhelmed so that more than one addition might be a consideration.

Replacing Emmett shouldn't

Replacing Emmett shouldn't take long at all. Does anyone have one of those sock monkey dolls laying around. Prop one of those up in his seat and Olyblog is good to go.
»

Shouldn't

this be front page? it could have a wide impact on this community and deserves greater prominence I think.
»

Today's roster of docents

looks like an invitation list for a sausage party. We should use this opportunity to change that.
»

Where is Emma when you need her?

:)
»

Last word is

She's running a monkey puppet rescue operation in Guyana and has no internet access.
»

No....Emma is right here

Just ask Sybil or one of the other personalities on The Olympian Comments thread.

I'm not voting.  I'm like the guy that abstains from everything on "Doc Hollywood"

I will say that I won't be tolerant of Gug blowing smoke up Norm's skirt, docent or not.

»

How exactly does my skirt

How exactly does my skirt come into play here???
»

That was my question...

...too.

The memory that you can't get rid of....

There was that one time that Gug talked about blowing smoke up your skirt.....I can't get the picture our of my mind.

Gug says it's something like not wanting to look at a car accident but you can't help yourself.

The real reason Emmett is moving on

I asked Gramma not to get that tatoo

But, you can't tell her anything.
»

LOL

>mega-chuckle< ...that was a good funny =)
»

Pretty clever...

...wish I thought of that.
»

I'm flattered.

I won't say I don't have ideas; I've got all the elements of a blog post about online communities that I haven't quite got the hook for. (For my general take on that sort of thing, see the 9-year-old MetaFilter. I think a MetaTalk would be an excellent addition to OlyBlog.)

And yes, I do know about this whole web-making thing. :) I even went to DrupalCamp Seattle a couple of weeks ago. Additionally, I've been blogging for more than 7 years, a fact which never fails to surprise me.

OTOH...I'm perpetually busy to the point of being overloaded. I don't know that I could fairly contribute as I think a docent ought. And I don't want OlyBlog disputes to be part of my home life any more than they are now. (That's all I'm going to say about that. ::blows kisses at chad360::)

Maybe I'll take this as an opportunity to put some brain-time into my philosophy of online communities, which as I said, I've been meaning to write for a while. Then I may have made up my mind whether to accept the nomination or graciously decline.

And thank you, Emmett, not just for the nomination, but for your excellent contributions to OlyBlog as both a docent and an author.

»

You'd be a great addition

hope you accept.

And, thanks too for the nod Emmett.

If this were an interview,

If this were an interview, and knowing what Olyblog runs on, in addition to your rationale - HIRE.

That said, a docent-duo with Chad is appealing for obvious reasons.  Enpen did this with his better half in an advice column that was quite good.  I don't know why it floundered but my guess is that it didn't generate enough anon interest.  Oly is small if you really think about it.  Olyblog is even smaller.

A glance at the front page...

reveals yet another worthy candidate. jlw is not only passionately dedicated to citizen journalism, but also possesses teaching skills.

Yeah...

jlw rocks. We've been pestering her for awhile about becoming an OlyBlog docent. But I think you're right, we should pester her again.
