So NAG is just cheering?
Submitted by Rick on Fri, 10/10/2008 - 7:42am.Beware the terrible simplifiers.
Jacob Burckhardt
i dunno
Submitted by emmettoconnell on Fri, 10/10/2008 - 7:49am.I'm seriously confused.
If nihilism is the basis for all of this, why try to justify it based on some sort of moral code?
It's all about reproductive strategy
Submitted by Laurian on Fri, 10/10/2008 - 9:54am.From the male perspective if I make myself desirable to radical women I have a better chance of passing on my genetic code. Part of creating that attraction is to define myself as part of a exclusive but vital community such as Critical Mass or NAG or even the Democratic party.
Emmitt, you may be looking for a rational reason for nihilism when 2 billion years of non-rational but very effective sexual reproduction can't be wrong. Bottom line humans are hideously clever mammals.
I love the explanation on
Submitted by Just another voice on Fri, 10/10/2008 - 10:10am.Anyway, in a time of internet news sources I highly doubt people are that swayed by what the daily zero has to say, anyway. And comparing the Olympian to a Nazi newspaper-- ehh, poor taste.
But I am Just Another Voice
Social Change
Submitted by Bert on Fri, 10/10/2008 - 2:59pm.This type of action is secretive, destructive, vengeful, fear-provoking, dualistic, and I believe generally harmful to the cause of creating a better world.
I make no bones about my support for open acts of nonviolent civil resistance - legitimate use of protective force as it is designed to prevent further harm from occurring.
It should also be clear that I bear no particular sweet spot for the establishment at The Olympian.
I also have my fair share of serious disagreements and policy differences with the people over on the City Council.
However, this type of action is just destructive. And it is only likely to further the descent into a security state. That's the reality here. Whoever did this tire-slashing should come forward, fess up, and apologize for this destructive and divisive act.
Does The Olympian contribute to the wrongs of the world? -- Yes.
Will slashing the tires on four delivery vans help the situation? -- No.
Of course, that's just my opinion.
I wonder and I am very curious if Cmndr Bjornstad has any suspects in this incident.
PURE ANARCHY:
Submitted by Laurian on Fri, 10/10/2008 - 8:55pm.Oh come on now
Submitted by a.future.with.n... on Fri, 10/10/2008 - 10:21pm.Anarchism isn't new, isn't untested and frankly is a pretty neat idea for the future with a whole set of pretty useful principles that are somewhat easy to apply now. It;s not for everybody, and unlike other forms of social organization doesn't try to be.
If I read correctly, the tire slashers identified themselves as nihilists. It's very different, and also very exhausting. It's true that people damage or disable property in the name of anarchy every so often, with varying degrees of success. At worst it's petty vandalism. At best it's wholly insurrectional. I guess, if people MUST slash tires, I'd rather have them doing it in the name of a half baked principle than simply because they're bored and angry.
Of course I'd rather tires didn't get slashed AND that the news was useful and truthful, I'm a have-cake-and-eat kind of person, but neither of those things are going to happen. I don't understand Robert Whitlock sometimes. A pacifist in favor of police and prisons is in my opinion WAY more insulting and angering than some stupid tires getting blown at a newspaper I didn't like to begin with.
Remember Rob W, when the time comes, it won't be those movement destroying anarchists kicking in your door to extraordinarily render you. Be careful who you cheerlead.
Wow!
Submitted by Laurian on Sat, 10/11/2008 - 5:37am.Police and Prisons
Submitted by Bert on Sat, 10/11/2008 - 2:32pm.There you go again jumping to conclusions. I do not think that I have indicated favoritism for police or prisons as a means to handle social ills. That said, we live in a sick society, and I think that the police do serve a function in maintaining order. That said, the agents of chaos are not these nihilists - nor the blac bloc or any subsersive movement. The agents of disorder are within the establishment, Wal-Mart for example, causing environmental and social degradation.
You don't understand me, perhaps, because you misunderstand me, and further, you may have alerted yourself, all on your own, to some basic misconceptions about me - about who I am and what I believe.
I believe in anarchy - an ethical and nonviolent anarchy. An anarchy that respects reciprocity (aka the Golden Rule.)
I am sorry if I gave reason for misunderstanding. I do not favor authoritarianism or draconian social controls. However, I am a realist - and I understand that all that is currently standing in between the absolute tyranny of the Wal-mart types in Corporate America and society is the semblance of good government - tattered and shattered though it may be (especially at the federal level after 8 years of Bush Jr.)
I want social change. I want to live in a fair society that respects everyone - all individuals. I want to live in a society that respects the planet - that values land (to reference Aldo Leopold) not as a commodity, but as a community to which it, and all individuals, belong.
Things take time. Sometimes change happens very rapidly. But it requires patience to wait for that time. Slashing tires doesn't help anyone.
As far as anyone kicking down my door? I try not to give anyone reason for doing that. I am truly interested in serving the best interests of humanity and the planet.
Pure Anarchy
Submitted by Bert on Sat, 10/11/2008 - 2:16pm.Laurian, your idea and my idea of pure anarchy are totally different. Mine has an absence of violence. Mine is democratic - true democracy is anarchical.
My idea of pure anarchy is where people share, and hold each other up, and cooperate - to make society and the world a better place for all.
It's clear that anarchy has been given a bad name. Pure anarchy does not imply violence.
Pure anarchy is simply the lack of hierarchy - it is the lack of authoritarian social controls.
Is pure anarchy possible? Is true democracy possible? Where there is a will - there is a way. But these are social matters, and they require not the will of an individual, but the will of a society.
However, I do believe that there is a place, and room, for organizing a more egalitarian society around at least some of the concepts of anarchy and democracy.
I like the idea of a consensus based anarchical open representative democracy - where everyone is welcome to participate in decision making and governance.

slash tires = dumbass move
Submitted by chad360 on Sat, 10/11/2008 - 10:14am.who cares? when you go so far as to vandalize something, you deflate whatever merit your movement has~
These >losers< need to re-think their call, and NAG can go eat lunch for all I care-
They nailed Jeff Kingsbury!
Submitted by OlyDowntowner on Sat, 10/11/2008 - 11:26am.I believe in a free press so I disagree with their action but their description of Jeff Kingsbury is spot on:
This is a very accurate description of Jeff Kingsbury.
Yea, my anarchy shot was mis-guided
Submitted by Laurian on Sat, 10/11/2008 - 4:11pm.NAG are not anarchists, their not even nihilists. They are extortionists.
And what the hell does Jeff's sexuality have to do with a damn thing.
Was anyone saying Jeff
Submitted by OlyDowntowner on Sat, 10/11/2008 - 4:13pm.Well apparently someone at Oly Indy media though
Submitted by Laurian on Sat, 10/11/2008 - 7:49pm.it had something to do with something so much as to bring it up as a lead sentence. It's like mentioning race in a police blotter. It's about speaking in code.
Dear God, dare I suggest homophobia on the part of Oly Indy media? Yea, I do.
Maybe
