Here's one theory about why the Nazis have chosen Olympia as a location to spew their hate. From Ignorant Hussy:

One of the places where I used to live, Lacey, Washington has seen attempts to recruit Neo-Nazis. What is disturbing, the Lacey, Olympia and Tumwater WA area is home to soldiers and airmen from Ft. Lewis and McChord AFB. At Ft. Lewis are two Stryker Brigades, a Special Forces Group and a Ranger Battalion. My questions are, have the Neo-Nazis studied the demographics of the area? And do they hope to find the next Tim McVeigh there? The majority of soldiers find Neo-Nazis abhorrent. Tim McVeigh was one out of a thousand. Yes, there is a very small minority of military personnel who would actually do something like actually join the Neo-Nazi movement.

Ignorant Hussy? - Now there's

Ignorant Hussy? - Now there's a handle to reckon with, or something.

It is definitely a concern how the ongoing war status - and a developing culture of permanent war - will affect our uniformed service members in terms of psychology.

I recently read that 35% of American soldiers who've seen service in Iraq have sought attention for psychological matters.

I assume she meant the McVeig

I assume she meant the McVeigh example to be because of the action he carried out, not why he carried it out.

If she meant the latter, McVeigh wasn't part of the neo-Nazi movement.

If you want an interesting read on the psychological effects of killing another person, I'd suggest the book On Killing.

Well, at least the author is

Well, at least the author is aware of her own ignorance. Gotta give her some credit for admitting it.

I have long wished there was

I have long wished there was a simple philosophical geneolgy map so one could follow the family trees of particular philosophies and easily see the relation of one to another. For example, from some of the reading I've done, the USA was one for the first countries in the world to endorse eugenics, the science/philosophy that predates modern genetics. More than half the states in this country had laws on the books that allowed the government to forcibly sterilize "morons." We weren't so worried about "imbeciles" or "idiots." Oregon just removed their law in the last 10 years or so. There was grave concern that without such a program the USA would eventually be ruled by morons. (yes, many of us would suggest that has happened) Anyhow, the USA never followed through with a full scale program that would have resulted in genocide. Yet Germany did under that Nazi's. I'm trying to get to the underlying philosophy of the NSM and other racist superiority groups. Such philosophies are an integral part of American culture and history. My sense is the NSM shares philosophies with a variety of hate groups. What is the difference between the NSM and the KKK and the Aryan Nations? It's like asking what the difference is between a Luthern and Catholic. Is it a stretch to suggest that McVeigh would have felt at home with the NSM? I have a feeling he would have found much in common. So the idea of setting up recruitment drives in areas near military bases is not that outlandish. I spent a couple years in the Army and back then race was a major dividing line between soldiers. My guess is it hasn't changed much. Nevertheless, it's important to not just sit by silently. I don't have access to it right now, so I don't have the actual words, but there is that famous poem from WWII where the author talks about the Nazi's coming for various people and he did nothing and when they came for him there wasn't anyone to save him.

I don't know if McVeigh would

I don't know if McVeigh would have felt at home with the NSM but my assumption is if he wanted to be part of a racist movement he would have joined one.

He was part of the anti-government movement. He saw a government growing far bigger than was originally intended. I suppose one could call McVeigh a visionary judging by where we are today.

For a very local example of t

For a very local example of the Eugenics movement and Nazi ties, see my Nov. 11 OlyBlog entry, "Henry McCleary and the Land of the Rising Sun."

As for McVeigh, I suppose one could call Charles Manson a visionary as well, but in my book both of them are just guilty of murder and nothing more, no matter how much of a political spin you want to put on it.

McVeigh was alleged to have been involved with the Aryan Nations via the Midwest Bank Robbers. Although the evidence isn't 100% solid, the association would be in keeping with his other actions.

I suggest changing the taglin

I suggest changing the tagline "This ain't CNN" to the more informative
"80% Nazi talk 90% of the time. Hail Victory!"

"I learned long ago, never to wrestle with a pig. You get dirty, and besides, the pig likes it." - George Bernard Shaw

Hahahaha, sooooo very true.
I would hope there is a little bit more to Olympia then the constant threat of Nazi invasion. Maybe we should just be done with it and build a wall.
